Shirokiya Japan Village Walk has been developed as a theme park village with Shirokiya Guardian Spirits Sanctuary at its core in the image of Monzen-machi (門前町), a town which is built adjacent to shrines and temples. Around this area, many small stores line the wide and narrow streets. Such as a theme park village like Shirokiya Japan Village Walk is the only commercial property of its kind in the world. Hikotaro Omura opened a notion store at Nihonbashidori, Edo (now Tokyo) in August, 1662. This marked the beginning of Shirokiya, Japan's oldest department store. In 1958, Shirokiya was purchased by a larger Japan-based department store. And on October 29, 1959, the first branch of Shirokiya outside of Japan was opened in Hawaii's then brand new Ala Moana Shopping Center. Soon after, in 1966, Shirokiya moved to its present location in Phase II of the shopping center. A branch store was opened in the Kaahumanu Shopping Center on Maui, in November 1973. And, on April 2, 1981, a third Shirokiya store opened in Phase I of the Pearlridge Shopping Center. But 2001 marked another major change in Shirokiya's history. The weak economy in Japan forced a change in ownership as well as the closing of the two branches. Now locally owned, Shirokiya in the Ala Moana Shopping Center continues to offer the finest quality Japanese merchandise to local as well as visiting shoppers. Through the years Shirokiya has become very much a part of the cultural community of Hawaii. And we are very grateful for the show of support the people of Hawaii has given us during the changing times.

Hawaii Shingon Mission or Shingon Shu Hawaii located at 915 Sheridan Street in Honolulu, Hawaii, is one of the most elaborate displays of Japanese Buddhist temple architecture in Hawaiʻi. It was first built in 1915-1918 by Nakagawa Katsutaro, a master builder of Japanese-style temples, then renovated in 1929 by Hego Fuchino, a self-taught man who was the first person of Japanese ancestry to become a licensed architect in the Islands. The building underwent further changes in 1978, and was considerably augmented in 1992. However, its most distinctive features remain: the steep, hipped-gable roof with rounded-gable projection, both with elaborate carvings on the ends, and the glittering altar and interior furnishings from Japan that signify its ties to esoteric Shingon Buddhism. The temple was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 26 April 2002.
