Bean Sprout Learning Center was established with the intention of preparing young children for a love of learning in a safe, affordable and developmentally appropriate environment; staffed by caring and capable individuals.Bean Sprout Learning Center provides a hands-on based program for children ages 6 weeks to 4 years. We understand that each child develops and learns differently within his/her abilities, skills, and proficiency. We encourage children to develop at their own pace and make choices and decisions whenever possible. We are dedicated to helping children explore the world around them and gain independence and self-esteem. We aim to work in partnership with our Bean Sprout Learning Center parents to take learning to the next level.
Our Philosophy: Our philosophy of “loving, laughing and learning together” is achieved through developing children emotionally, physically, and socially in the proper environment. Therefore, Tooney Town’s staff is committed to making sure that the children in our center are nurtured in a learning atmosphere. It is our philosophy that children can develop emotionally, physically and socially, if the proper environment is provided. That is why Tooney Town is committed to making sure that your child is in a nurturing educational environment. We believe that “Learning is Fun” and that child care should also be fun, educational, nurturing and provide each family with a sense of security. The then-private University of Baltimore School of Law was founded in 1925, with the first class of 38 students receiving their diplomas in 1928. Created initially to serve the working population of the Baltimore area with a part-time evening program, the school added a full-time day division in 1969. In September 1970, the law school merged with Eastern College and its Mount Vernon School of Law. On Jan. 1, 1975, the school became a public institution when the University of Baltimore joined the State of Maryland's system for public higher education. The law school's new home, the John and Frances Angelos Law Center, opened in April 2013. The 12-story facility, at the northeast corner of North Charles Street and West Mount Royal Avenue, houses all of the school's clinics, centers and classrooms and affords students multiple options for indoor and outdoor study. The building, designed by German architect Stefan Behnisch, was granted LEED Platinum status by the U.S. Green Building Council. An alumni network of approximately 13,000 includes many prominent figures, such as Peter Angelos, owner of the Baltimore Orioles; Maryland's former first lady, the Hon. Catherine Curran O'Malley; Thomas Condon, considered the most powerful agent in professional football; and U.S. Rep. C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger III. Nearly one-third of Maryland's sitting judges are UB School of Law graduates. The University of Baltimore School of Law is accredited by the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools.
Union Baptist-Harvey Johnson Head Start (UBHJHS) has been in operation for over forty-five (45) years serving more than seven thousand (7,000) families and the Upton Community. UBHJHS Center is privileged to be under the auspices of the Union Baptist Church. Union Baptist Head Start began in the Harvey Johnson Center built by Rev. Baxter L. Matthews as a part of a Latch Key Program to protect children, empower families, and maintain Union Baptist Church’s intention to create a beloved community. The plan was to have such an educational program for the Black community, as did the Jewish community for their youth. In 1968, the Community Action Agency, directed by Parren J. Mitchell, and spearheaded by members of the Goon Squad, began an eight-week summer program of Head Start with federal funding. For three years, Dorothy B. Mapp, LaVern E. Stewart, Melva P. Greene and Beatrice P. Rodwell operated without compensation so that the children of the community had a place to play safely and to learn creatively while their parent worked. Eighteen children began that program under these persons who were professional school teachers working unsalaried. In the fall of 1970, due to the success of the pilot, it was enlarged to a full time program and Dorothy Mapp and LaVern Stewart resigned their professional positions in public school to create the first of seventeen Head Start Centers in Baltimore City. The Head Start program, which began in the Harvey Johnson Center of Union Baptist Church, grew to a $2 million dollar building project that encompassed the renovation of six buildings to the north and south of the church. Under the vision of Rev. Vernon N. Dobson, a Child First campaign was launched to build a state-of-the-art facility. In 1993, we broke ground and in 1996, the program, which had gained national prominence in excellence in child care, moved into the completed learning center. Since its inception, the program has followed the philosophy “the maximum feasible participation of the poor” and models Maya Angelou’s expression, “At our best level of existence we are parts of a family and at our highest level of achievement we work to keep the family alive.”
