In 1978, Pete’s Tako House was established by Pete Rios and Dora “Kookie” Rios-Rivera. Prior to being Pete’s, we began as a Tink-A-Tako in 1977. Alex “Tink” Halsell later sold it to Dora at a very friendly price after helping establish quite a few other restaurants around town, and being a family friend as well. We kept the K in “Tako” in order to honor Tink for giving our family the opportunity to build what many have come to love. Our original place on Main Ave. was open for 33 years, until we decided to relocate to our new location on Brooklyn Ave. We have many great memories, but one that stands out was in September of 1987, when Pope John Paul II passed by in the “Popemobile”, which we feel blessed to have had the chance to witness. We eventually outgrew the walls though, and wanted to offer a better experience to our loyal customers, and at the same time make new friends along the way. We will continue to bring our special recipes and homemade corn and flour tortillas that everyone has come to know and love, but are now able to offer an expanded menu that we hope you will enjoy. You all have grown along with us like family. Some customers come by to just say “Hello”, that’s how family oriented we’ve become. We continue to honor your presence, and hope you enjoy our hospitality. We are glad you could join us as we move in to the future, and welcome you like family, to our new “House”.

Cured at Pearl

306 Pearl Pkwy
San Antonio, TX 78215

(210) 314-3929

Beyond the grand and powerful doors of the 110-year-old building that housed the famed Pearl Brewing Company, in the space once belonging to its president’s headquarters, is Cured – chef Steve McHugh’s highly anticipated first restaurant. This seasoned chef from a small farm in Wisconsin has accomplished so much within his career. His ten years in the vibrant culinary epicenter of New Orleans were crowned by his work as chef de cuisine for chef John Besh at August, followed by two years opening and overseeing Lüke in San Antonio – Besh’s first establishment outside of New Orleans. Yet, McHugh’s highest achievement of all has been defeating cancer. After such a life-changing triumph, he set out to open his own restaurant, endowing it with a name that speaks to his personal feat, as well as the artisanal cured meats hanging in view – a gritty glimpse of the epicurean pleasures ahead. Beyond will, character and vision, McHugh's rapport with food now instinctively insists on a purity of natural ingredients and hands-on, unadulterated cooking methodology that enhanced his own healing process. His from-scratch focus and his conscious use of ingredients proven to empower the human body – like Blood Orange, Sweet Potato, and Cauliflower – unites science with art, resulting in a purposeful, powerful, seasonally-dynamic menu. Dishes such as Sweet Potato Agnolotti with Bourbon Brown Sugar and Sage and Slow Cooked Heritage Hog with Smoked Andouille and Okra, are complemented by cocktails individually crafted with the same care and attention, right down to the house-made bitters. One of the driving philosophies of Cured is an appreciation of life, in gratitude and celebration. Steve McHugh has found a way to implement a bit of “gastronomic giving” – by donating $1 from every charcuterie board ordered to a different charitable organization every quarter. The progressive and honest culinary approach resonates throughout the design of the restaurant, which honors its historic roots while adding splashes of modern, old-school and industrial chic accents in stunning juxtaposition.

Tuk Tuk Tap Room
Distance: 0.3 mi Competitive Analysis
1702 Broadway St
San Antonio, TX 78215

(210) 222-8277

Tuk Tuk Taproom story did not start out as a long-winded Harvard business plan, quite the contrary. David was entertaining another restaurant property nearby to put a Southeast Asian concept, meanwhile Steve was working on a craft beer-centric establishment. Funny how the world works, just one passing comment by David “how well {craft} beer and Asian food go together!” Was all it took for Jody, Steve’s wife, to conjure up the proposal to unite these two incredible passions that pair so well together. The story wouldn’t be complete unless we mentioned this occurred over one of David’s homebrews inside a shady restaurant he frequents. The concept was Asian Street Fare & Craft Beer, but how does that equate into the design, style of service, and most importantly the key phrase that brings it all together? The words Pho-mentation came out, and from that point on everything occurred organically. The building had 50 plus years of history, between a mechanic’s garage to a Mexican restaurant. During the nine-month renovation, it was stripped down, the original wood beams and square-shaped brick were preserved and are only some of the gems that pepper the restored restaurant space. Part of what makes Asia so mind-altering is the constant use of repurposed materials. We used reclaimed wood along the bars, to old wooden spools that have been constructed into various furniture pieces by a local craftsman. There is also no shortage of modern elements that make up Tuk Tuk, with a state-of-the-art draft system, boasting 72 taps between two bars, a custom fabricated grill for replicating the traditional cooking processes of Asia, and three dimensional art installations. Tuk Tuk proudly serves traditional Asian street food that is found throughout the continent. Each dish {and its ingredients} have been carefully researched and eaten, often in its country of origin. We proudly support local agriculture when possible and practical. The food is simple by design, yet layered with intoxicating flavors and freshness. All our food is made from scratch with hand-picked ingredients and no MSG. We offer a wide range of beverages from a proprietary Kombucha {fermented tea} by our friends at Buddha’s Brew in Austin; to 60 craft beers (on tap), 50 bottles, wines and cuvee coffee from our taps. There is something for everyone at Tuk Tuk, we look forward to sharing our passions with you.
