Since 1929, the Center has responded to the changing environment and the needs of the community. Today, our largest programs are our year round youth programs, which include our afterschool program and Cowemoki Summer Enrichment Program. The Center also offers a wide range of programs serving youth, adults, and seniors. These include the Cambridge Winter Farmers Market, our Senior Thanksgiving Luncheon, The Hip Hop Transformation Program, Riverside Art Gallery, and The Coast Kitchen community meals program. Hundreds of individuals use our facilities throughout the year whether they use our services, rent our space for events, or are enrolled in our programs. Many of the staff and children in our programs come from families that have been involved with the Center for four or even five generations, enriching our Center with a strong sense of history, family, and community.

YWCA Cambridge is headquartered in the historic Main building, which is just over a hundred years old, having been put into service by the YWCA back in 1905. In the 1950s, the YWCA added a second building to the property, known as the Tanner Residences. Together, they offer 60,000 square feet of space. Renovations While periodic improvements have been made to both buildings over time, our significant recent renovations were needed to ensure their viability for the next generation. Both buildings, which serve as critical community resources, were experiencing concerning levels of physical deterioration. The goal of the recent rehabilitation plan was to comprehensively respond to these capital needs. The scope of work for the rehabilitation was substantial. It included structural repairs and seismic upgrades, improved accessibility, fire system upgrades, replacement and modernization of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Rehabilitation also included energy efficiency upgrades such as new windows, mitigation of air leakages, installation of efficient appliances and fixtures. These efficiency items will provide for operating budget savings over the long term. The SRO housing at Tanner and Main serve as an essential community resource that is at great risk. The recent renovation project ensures the integrity of the buildings for the next 30 years of use. 103 units of SRO housing are now in place! Strenuous efforts have been made to reconcile the need for modernization of the buildings with maintaining as many units of housing as possible. The addition of a second elevator and bathroom upgrades to make the Main building accessible to people with disabilities has been carefully designed to reduce the number of housing units by just 4 units (107 pre-rehab, 103 post-rehab). In addition to these items, SRO units have been renovated for better air quality, and received new fixtures, appliances and finishes. Common spaces for residents have been improved to include lounge space with internet access and seating, creation of an additional lounge, and upgrades to the laundry room. The common bathrooms and kitchens have been adapted for accessibility and all fixtures and systems have been updated.

The Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House was founded in 1902 as a settlement House providing information and services to help immigrants assimilate into American culture. For over a century, the organization has maintained a grassroots approach to services on a limited budget. Today we provide programs for all ages—from infants to elders. We have a busy food pantry, an out of school time program for children, summer camp, outreach to young adults at risk, heath related programs for seniors and men of color, community organizing, and an open computer center and free technology classes. We host community-wide events, financial, exercise, poetry writing, drumming and other classes and welcome the Area IV community to meetings and local gatherings.
