Margaret Fuller House Reviews

71 Cherry St
Cambridge, MA 02139

The Margaret Fuller House was the birthplace and childhood home of American transcendentalist Margaret Fuller (1810–1850). It is located at 71 Cherry Street, in the Old Cambridgeport Historic District area of Cambridge, Massachusetts, now called the "Area Four" Neighborhood (north of Mass. Ave., between Central and Kendall Squares). The house is now a National Historic Landmark. The three-story, wooden, Federal style house was built in the early 19th century, and was Fuller's home from birth until age 16. In 1902 it became the Margaret Fuller House of Cambridge, a settlement house providing information and services to help immigrants assimilate into American culture. It is now known as the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House.HistoryFuller's parents, Timothy Fuller and Margaret Crane Fuller, were married in 1809. A few months after the wedding, they bought the three-story, Federal-style house on Cherry Street for the high price of $6,000. The couple's daughter Sarah Margaret Fuller was born in this home on May 23, 1810.Current useToday, the Margaret Fuller House is being used to service the public in the community of Area 4 in Cambridge. It provides a free computer lab, computer classes, a food pantry, after-school services for children, meeting room space for various activities for the public and a daytime summer camp for children. A fundraiser is held every year for the MFNH called the Sweet Soul Supper to help provide money to run these services.

YWCA Cambridge is headquartered in the historic Main building, which is just over a hundred years old, having been put into service by the YWCA back in 1905. In the 1950s, the YWCA added a second building to the property, known as the Tanner Residences. Together, they offer 60,000 square feet of space. Renovations While periodic improvements have been made to both buildings over time, our significant recent renovations were needed to ensure their viability for the next generation. Both buildings, which serve as critical community resources, were experiencing concerning levels of physical deterioration. The goal of the recent rehabilitation plan was to comprehensively respond to these capital needs. The scope of work for the rehabilitation was substantial. It included structural repairs and seismic upgrades, improved accessibility, fire system upgrades, replacement and modernization of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Rehabilitation also included energy efficiency upgrades such as new windows, mitigation of air leakages, installation of efficient appliances and fixtures. These efficiency items will provide for operating budget savings over the long term. The SRO housing at Tanner and Main serve as an essential community resource that is at great risk. The recent renovation project ensures the integrity of the buildings for the next 30 years of use. 103 units of SRO housing are now in place! Strenuous efforts have been made to reconcile the need for modernization of the buildings with maintaining as many units of housing as possible. The addition of a second elevator and bathroom upgrades to make the Main building accessible to people with disabilities has been carefully designed to reduce the number of housing units by just 4 units (107 pre-rehab, 103 post-rehab). In addition to these items, SRO units have been renovated for better air quality, and received new fixtures, appliances and finishes. Common spaces for residents have been improved to include lounge space with internet access and seating, creation of an additional lounge, and upgrades to the laundry room. The common bathrooms and kitchens have been adapted for accessibility and all fixtures and systems have been updated.
