The Marjorie Barrick Museum is a museum located on the main campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, established in 1967. The museum was originally instituted as a natural history museum with a focus on the natural history and environment of Nevada and the broader Southwestern United States. In December 2011, the Barrick joined the UNLV College of Fine Arts and became the anchor of the Galleries at UNLV. The six galleries and one museum that make up the Galleries are each entities in their own right linked through a common administration. The Marjorie Barrick Museum, is a well-known venue for engaging exhibitions and events, and promotes engagement with the visual arts among a broad community including UNLV students, faculty, and staff; the greater Las Vegas community; and the national and international art community.HistoryThe founding of a natural history museum at the university—then an institution only a decade old, known as Nevada Southern University—began with a collection of specimens from the Desert Research Institute (DRI), the Nevada System of Higher Education's graduate research institute. In September 1967, the DRI opened a small museum facility in premises across from the university's grounds, as part of an expansion of DRI's activities into southern Nevada. The museum was created under the direction of archaeologist Richard H. Brooks, assistant research professor at the university and a researcher (later director) of the DRI-affiliated Nevada Archaeological Survey. Its exhibits consisted of DRI's local collection of living desert animal specimens and Native American artifacts.
The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Paradise, Nevada, is an entertainment resort owned and operated by Brookfield Asset Management and Warner Gaming, LLC.. The property is located on on the corner of Harmon and Paradise Road, inside the Paradise Corridor.Features of the property include the hotel tower, a 30000sqft casino, Tahitian-style beach and swimming pool, a nightclub, six restaurants, three cocktail lounges, several retail stores, a spa, a poker room, and "The Joint", a music venue. Hard Rock earns only about 30% of its revenue from gaming.HistoryThe Hard Rock Hotel & Casino was built in 1995 by Peter Morton, co-founder of the Hard Rock Cafe. It was expanded in 1999, and began another expansion in 2007. In June 2002 influential rock bassist John Entwistle of The Who died in one of the hotel's rooms. The hotel management originally refused to release the room number out of respect, but later reports indicate that Entwistle died in Room 658 (considered a "deluxe suite"). Many fans still pay tribute to Entwistle, by visiting the hotel. On May 11, 2006, the Morgans Hotel Group signed definitive agreements with its partners to purchase the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. As part of the deal, MHG retains the rights to use the Hard Rock name for hotels and casinos in the Western United States and certain other territories, of land for expansion on the corner of Harmon and Paradise for $770 million. Morgans operated the property and had a 12.8% equity partner in the venture along with DLJ Merchant Banking Partners until February 2011. At that time, ownership of the hotel was turned over to Brookfield Asset Management, and operations were turned over to Warner Gaming.
