Overview: Minority undergraduate and graduate scholars in the computing disciplines in the U.S. are faced with multiple challenges. All too few and far between, they are scattered among research institutions where they not only experience the pressures of university life, similar to all of their fellow students, but they are often the only minority student in their classes, or one of very few. Their network of formal and informal resources, support, and encouragement, so critical to all students, is significantly smaller, and less robust. Add to that the possibility of having come from a high school that did not prepare them well, and losing this student, a priceless human resource, becomes a serious possibility. Students faced with these challenges make choices to leave their computing departments for more welcoming environments or to leave college altogether. Even those that graduate with a bachelor’s degree in computing may have had such a painful journey that they are highly unlikely to consider graduate school, and another opportunity for diversifying the professoriate and national leadership has been lost. The ELA provides resources and opportunities that support students at research universities to flourish in the discipline through three working models depending on the size of the university minority community. Our Work: The ELA provides resources and opportunities that support students at research universities to flourish in the discipline through three working models depending on the size of the university minority community. Local Model – Where a sufficient critical mass of underrepresented students exists at a university, a local support network encourages students. Local ELA programs provide in-person relationships with on-campus faculty and peers. Go to local chapters for more detailed information. Regional Model – Where critical mass is not available locally, a network is built through groups of universities within a region. Regional programs provide an opportunity for collaborations that can have a strong impact on several institutions, where individuals can meet and focus on multi-campus programs that give students and faculty the opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences. The ELA catalyzed the New England Computer Science Department Chairs organization, which successfully launched the first New England Undergraduate Computing Symposium (NEUCS) in 2010, and plan another regional symposium some time this year. National Model – Seeking out and supporting individuals across the country through virtual and in-person experiences, a national network allows any individual student, faculty member, or computing professional across the country to become connected to others as a part of the ELA. The national model is particularly important to isolated minority students.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations-Texas, Houston is dedicated to presenting an Islamic perspective on issues of importance to the American public. In offering that perspective, we seek to empower the Muslim community in America through political and social activism. CAIR is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-deductible grassroots advocacy and civil rights organization. The national headquarters for CAIR is in Washington, D.C. and there are over 20 affiliated CAIR chapters across America. CAIR was established to promote an accurate image of Islam and Muslims in America. We believe that misrepresentations of Islam today are most often the result of ignorance on the part of non-Muslims and reluctance on the part of Muslims to clearly articulate our beliefs. The Houston chapter was formed in December 2002 and opened the doors to our office in February 2003. Since then, we have made a positive impact on the local Houston community, with dozens of stories and consistent coverage in all local mainstream media outlets. CAIR-Houston representatives regularly appear on KPRC-TV (NBC 2), HTRK-TV (ABC 13), KHOU (CBS-11), KRIV (FOX-26), News 24 Houston, The Houston Chronicle, The Houston Press and other Texas media outlets. As a leading voice for the Houston Muslim Community, we strive to maintain the highest ethical standards in all of our endeavors. In our work towards portraying an accurate image of Islam in America, we offer diverse training presentations, workshops and seminars to empower and motivate the American Muslim community to participate effectively in political, social and civic activism. CAIR-Houston has a dedicated full-time staff, board members and volunteers working day and night to help defend the legal and constitutional rights in the workplace, schools, federal agencies and local government. We regularly participate in interfaith and civic dialogues with organizations dedicated to preserving America’s legacy of social justice. CAIR-Houston works with various corporations, schools, universities and government agencies providing them with training materials to be aware of Muslim religious practices. We do this by conducting workshops and seminars and have received numerous positive responses from our fellow Houstonians. CAIR will continue to serve as a leader in the Houston Muslim community, by striving to improve relations between Houstonians of all races, religions and cultures.
Our Vision: To help develop in a child a sense of self-worth, Christian values and direction that will ensure his/her lifetime self-determination.
The RTB Houston Chapter is located in the fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States, its energy capital, and home to the Johnson Space Center and several world-class universities. Our meetings are conveniently held near downtown in the Museum District. The Houston Chapter connects Reasons To Believe with the greater Houston area. Our goals are these: (1) to educate both Christians and non-Christians about the harmony between God's inerrant Word, the Bible, and His "book" of creation; (2) to explore new scientific reasons for placing faith in Jesus Christ as Creator, Lord, and Savior; and (3) to equip chapter members for loving and effective communication of these truths to the people around them. Please join us for our monthly meetings. You’ll receive a warm Texas welcome along with stimulating presentations and lively discussion.
