The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, founded in 1841, is the fourth oldest school of pharmacy in the nation. The School is one of seven professional schools and a graduate school located at the University of Maryland, a thriving center for life sciences research and community service. Through its education, research, and service programs, the School of Pharmacy strives to improve the health and well-being of society by aiding in the discovery, development, and use of medicines. The School of Pharmacy is comprised of three departments, Pharmacy Practice and Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Health Services Research. The Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science promotes the health and well being of the public by advancing the practice of pharmacy and generating and disseminating new knowledge related to pharmacy practice and drug use. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences conducts state-of-the-art research and discovery in the areas of cellular and chemical biology, neuroscience, pharmacology, biopharmaceutics and drug delivery. The Pharmaceutical Health Services Research Department provides teaching, service, and scholarly activities related the behavioral sciences, pharmacoeconomics, pharmacoepidemiology, and regulatory issues. In addition to cutting edge research in drug delivery mechanisms, cost impact studies, basic drug discovery and development, and disease management, the School engages in a wide variety of professional practice activities, partnering with over 200 community pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, and other agencies to provide services to citizens and practitioners around the State and across the nation.

The University of Maryland Medical Center is a teaching hospital with 757 beds based in Baltimore, Maryland, that provides the full range of health care to people throughout Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region. It gets more than 35,000 inpatient admissions and 165,000 outpatient visits each year. UMMC has approximately 6,500 employees as well as 1,000 attending physicians, and provides training for about half of Maryland's physicians and other health care professionals. The USGA is a campus-wide student government that represents the UMB students on campus. It consists of Student Senators who are elected each year to represent the different professional schools at monthly meetings (usually the second Tuesday of each month). The USGA Senate meetings center around issues and events that involve all UMB schools and their respective students. The Latino/a Law Students Association (LLSA) is an integral source of social and academic support for law students of Hispanic descent. LLSA members make up a network of students with interests in many fields of law who are devoted to the continued success of every member. Peer interactions support the transition into the law school environment and provide all members with assistance throughout their law school career. Additionally, LLSA seeks to provide a bridge for its members to become actively involved in associations and agencies concerned with issues affecting the Maryland Latino community. LLSA members attend Hispanic Committee meetings of the Maryland State Bar Association and are involved in the Hispanic National Bar Association. LLSA members also provide volunteer work in the community and assist at social festivities celebrating Hispanic contributions to the state.
The BioPark is a biomedical research park on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The BioPark welcomes additional life science companies to join its growing scientific community of emerging, high-growth life science tenants and UMB translational research and clinical treatment centers. For early-stage to mature bioscience companies, the BioPark offers a sophisticated laboratory and office environment on UMB’s vibrant academic medical center campus. Childhood Obesity is a dangerous health disparity that has almost tripled since 1963. States across the United States including Maryland have seen this number increase drastically. A new report puiblished by the Trust for Amercia's Health report, F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens Amercia's future, found that in all 50 states the rate of obesity is over 15%. Curbing this trend is essential if we are to create a longer, healthier future for our children. The University of Maryland and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have teamed up to host a state-wide summit on childhood obesity on November 15th and 16th at the Hilton Hotel in Baltimore. We are excited to offer current grantees of the Maryland State Department of Education's 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLCs) an avenue of continued networking and development. Grantees are encouraged to follow-up on discussion topics and new information gleaned from our network meetings, retreats and newsletters, as well as national and regional trainings. Feel free to start discussion threads and comments on best practices in your programs. This is also a place to share some of the great work and great fun being created throughout 21st CCLC programs to support student achievement and development in Maryland.
Our Philosophy I believe education helps the child to develop emotionally, socially and academically. A fun, safe and nurturing environment promotes learning and enables the growth of the child. It is my belief that fostering a fun, safe and nurturing environment while teaching respect for themselves and their peers is another critical area in the learning process. I am certain that when children know what is expected of them, feel safe and comfortable in their environment they begin to blossom. I believe that each child has their own unique learning style and deserve to be treated as individuals. As an educator it is up to us to discover each child’s learning style and incorporate it in our lesson so that everyone benefits from it. It is our desire and goal to help every child reach their fullest potential by helping and allowing them to take academic risk. This goal will be accomplished by being supportive, providing a safe environment and inviting the sharing of ideas. Our goal is to provide the students with a positive learning experience that will shape, mold and prepare them for their educational career. Through cooperative teaching, classroom management, parent involvement, technology and discussion of diversity our goal will be accomplished. Education is the foundation of our children’s future. I feel that in order to be a successful educator you have to have a love for the work you do, be committed to your profession and be dedicated to your students. We at Exploring Minds Child Care are such people and we will strive to be the best educators and supportive staff to your children that we can be.
The Department of Sociology concentrates on two broad areas at the graduate and undergraduate levels: Global social change, which focuses on cross-national, comparative research; and social inequality, which primarily focuses on family, education, work, race, gender, policy, and immigration. These concentrations trace back to the department’s founding in 1959 by renowned American sociologist James Coleman. The department has since earned a reputation as one of most selective, personalized sociology departments in the U.S. Currently home to 12 faculty members, 41 graduate students, and roughly 30 undergraduates, the department’s intimacy afforded by such numbers creates a unique scholarly atmosphere, in which faculty and students interact and collaborate frequently. Scholars in the department share a wide variety of interests and interdisciplinary partnerships. Students are given flexible parameters for their study, and several faculty members have been honored with joint appointments in other Johns Hopkins schools and divisions. The department has an especially unique relationship with the Bloomberg School of Public Health, which offers faculty and students access to first-rate collaborations in fields such as population and demography, mental health and mental hygiene, and healthcare organization. The department is also proudly partnered with the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and is committed to building and maintaining strong foundations in quantitative research methods.
