The Alonzo A. Crim Center at GSU was established in 1996 to provide a “city-wide laboratory for the development of excellence in urban education.” A grant from the United Parcel Service (UPS) Foundation provided much of the Center’s early funding. During that time, the Center also received funding from an Annenberg Foundation grant involving a collaborative effort between several school districts and universities designed to create schools that “provided excellent education for low-income African-American children.” The Crim Center was originally housed in the COE’s Department of Educational Policy Studies. The Crim Center is currently funded by the Offices of the Dean in the College of Education. Georgia State University’s College of Education has provided office space and administrative support in the Crim Center for some projects that have an urban focus. The Crim Center is described as interdisciplinary. Projects housed in the Center involve faculty from COE departments. A central goal of the Crim Center is to “bring together faculty, educators, and community members who are interested in conducting research and provide services to schools in urban school systems.” Many of the grants awarded to the Crim Center require interdisciplinary approaches whose partners span departments and K-12 urban schools.
The Rialto Youth Jazz Orchestra was formed in June 2011. RYJO consists of two Big Bands (Intermediate & Advanced) and five jazz combos, RYJO exposes students to the full spectrum of jazz music and education. The students are selected through audition; participating high school students come from the following counties: Fulton, Cobb, Dekalb, Gwinnett, Clayton, and Fayette. Home schooled students are also encouraged to audition. Jazz is American music and it is important to protect and preserve this important musical and cultural heritage. The best way to do this is to teach young musicians about the art form through performance. Our big bands and jazz combos perform music that is both historically significant and challenging. The students receive outstanding instruction in jazz performance, jazz history, and jazz improvisation from our faculty. In rehearsals we stress personal responsibility, musicianship, team work, and artistic expression. This select high school group is a continuation of our middle school jazz program, Rialto Jazz for Kids. The young musicians are treated as professionals, even though they are still of high school age. Many of the graduating high school students go on to become music majors in college. Former band members are currently attending New England Conservatory, University of North Texas, Georgia State University, Berklee College of Music, the University of Georgia, Kennesaw State, Florida State, and the University of Miami. Some past highlights include concerts at Georgia State University, a featured performance at Café 290, Churchill Grounds (Atlanta’s premier jazz club), the Atlanta Jazz Festival in Piedmont Park, The Jazz Education Network Conference (Atlanta 2013), and the Governors Inaugural Reception at Philips Arena in 2011.
