Joel A. Brown (The “Poeticist”) is the Chief Visionary Officer of Pneumos, a management consulting firm specializing in: Organizational Development Leadership Training Diversity, Inclusion, and Cultural Competency Conflict Resolution Life/Executive Coaching Its unyielding mission is to “create organizational space which is dynamic, inclusive, and strategic.” Joel works with a variety of organizations, including non-profit organizations, Fortune 500 companies, churches, and institutions of higher learning to build consciousness, capacity, community, and collective esteem. Pneumos works collaboratively with organizational leaders and staff to create synergistic cultures where employees and leaders can successfully navigate operational challenges. Joel has worked with the City and County of San Francisco, Kansas City Power & Light, the Bar Association of San Francisco, the Human Rights Campaign Fund, Groundspark, the University of South Florida, and the Office of Naval Intelligence, to name a few. Joel is an associate of The Management Resource Group, an assessment company committed to partnering with organizations to achieve success. Joel is certified to use MRG’s Leadership 360®, LEA Best Practices, and LEA Strategic Directions learning tools. Joel is also a U.S. platform editor for Diversophy®, an online game and learning tool in intercultural expertise. Joel graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota, with a degree in political science. From 1994 – 1996, Joel designed multicultural diversity programs for the entire University of Minnesota residence hall system. The programs had a tiered structure, with emphasis on several student sub-sets: the general student population people of color, and the resident assistants. In 1997, Joel served on a multi-disciplinary team, which performed interventions in the Rochester, Minnesota, school district, to quell race riots and mitigate the smoldering racial tensions between Ethiopian students and the majority-white student body, staff, and faculty. After graduating from the University of Minnesota and the University of Virginia School of Law, Joel worked for six years as an employment litigator focusing on wage and hour disputes, discrimination matters, and sexual harassment cases. Although these issues had a legal scope, they also had a direct correlation to staff development, conflict resolution, and organizational dynamics. By coaching his clients to see their employees as stakeholders and helping them adopt a bilateral perspective, Joel was able to help his clients reduce costs, include productivity, institute system-wide change, and become more responsive to their employees. Additionally, Joel counseled clients such as Northwest Airlines, Caribou Coffee, Ford Motor Credit, and American Express Financial Advisors on creating more inclusive workplace environments. Joel is best known for his critical analysis, creativity, humor, and his ability to build consensus. Joel is viewed as a master communicator, and is skilled in the “Diversity, Difference & Dialogue” process©, which is designed to maximize communication at all levels throughout an organization. Joel approaches people with great conversational dexterity, and is able to reduce complex social and organizational issues to their simplest form. His article, “Black and Gays: Bridging the Cultural Divide,” was widely circulated in the Legal Services of Northern California newsletter in the Summer of 2009. Joel is a member of the diversity think tank, Diversity 2000, and a political think tank, New Leaders Council, which trains and creates a pipeline for social entrepreneurs. He has also served as the Co-chair of the San Francisco Regional Council of “Out and Equal,” a non-profit dedicated to transforming workplace culture.
