Chicago is a rapid transit station on the Red Line of the Chicago 'L'. It serves a significant portion of the Near North Side and Streeterville neighborhoods. With 5,259,992 overall boardings in 2014, it is the busiest station on the Red Line north of the Loop.LocationThe second stop on the Red Line north of the Chicago River, Chicago station lies in the central portion of the Near North Side. Specifically, it is located underneath the intersection of State Street and Chicago Avenue. It is three blocks west of the northern section of the Magnificent Mile; the Chicago Water Tower is located on that strip at the intersection of Chicago and Michigan Avenues. It is also the closest 'L' station to the John Hancock Center, Holy Name Cathedral, the Rush Street entertainment district, and the downtown campus of Loyola University Chicago. The Chicago campus of the Moody Bible Institute is also nearby.HistoryThe Chicago station opened on October 17, 1943, as part of the State Street Subway, which forms the central portion of what is now the Red Line between North/Clybourn and Roosevelt stations.During the 1950s, the CTA implemented skip-stop service throughout the 'L' system. Under this service pattern, Chicago was designated as AB along with all other downtown stations (on the Red Line, those stops south of Clark/Division and north of Cermak were given AB designations). As a result, all trains stopped at these stations. The skip-stop service was ended due to budget cuts in the 1990s.

Chicago Lights was founded in 2004 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit outreach organization that embodies the commitment of the Fourth Presbyterian Church of Chicago to seek justice and to compassionately serve its neighbors in need. It is the successor to Partners in Education, which was founded in 1991. Since the inception of our first program, Tutoring, in 1964, we have served more than 50,000 people. Today Chicago Lights annually serves 4,000 individuals of all races, ethnic backgrounds, and religious traditions. With 13 full-time and 14 part-time staff, over 1,000 volunteers, and partnerships with more than 130 other organizations, Chicago Lights lifts up those who are underserved to help them claim a fuller life and a brighter future.
Hustle Up the Hancock begins at 7 a.m. Climbers take off in 8 second intervals creating staggered starts. There are two categories of the climb: the 94-floor climb and the 52 -floor CBS2 Half Climb. The 94-floor full climb and 52-floor CBS2 Half Climb are held simultaneously in two separate stairwells. Half climbers start on floor 42 - both climbers end together in John Hancock Observatory on floor 94. The Full Climb has a total of 1,632 steps. The amount of steps per floor varies throughout the building. The CBS2 Half Climb has 816 steps. Hustle Up the Hancock is a ChampionChip timed event. Water bottles are provided in the concourse area and throughout the stairwells. At the finish line participants enjoy the sights of the Windy City from John Hancock Observatory on the 94th floor. The Post-Event Expo and Celebration at the nearby Hilton Suites Chicago Hotel.
Like many projects of this nature, FacingDisability.com was born out of personal experience. In the summer of 1986, after diving into a swimming pool, our daughter, Vicki Hill, sustained a neck injury resulting in quadriplegia. During her rehabilitation, Vicki was fortunate to be able to participate in a peer- mentoring program. The program introduced her to other people who had sustained injuries like hers a few years before. They helped her learn how to think about her disability and live with her new body. They offered a lot more than well-meaning help and advice. They were the undeniably believable and unquestionably honest voices of experience. And they were an enormous help. But there was no peer-mentoring program to help her parents, family and friends to deal with the new life situations that they themselves were experiencing as a result of Vicki’s sudden disability. There is still virtually nothing today—no program focused on personally supporting the people around the injured person. What’s more, even today, there are many people with new spinal cord injuries like Vicki’s who are not able to participate in peer-mentoring programs. The lack of such programs is the reason behind FacingDisability.com.
YALSA aims to support library staff in alleviating the challenges teens face, and in putting all teens ‒ especially those with the greatest needs ‒ on the path to successful and fulfilling lives.
The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) is a nonprofit professional organization established “to promote the mutual professional interests of librarians and other library workers.” To that end, the ALA-APA is focused on two broad areas: 1. Certification of individuals in specializations beyond the initial professional degree. 2. Direct support of comparable worth and pay equity initiatives, and other activities designed to improve the salaries and status of librarians and other library workers. The ALA-APA is a companion organization to the American Library Association (ALA), an educational association established in 1876 to “promote library service and librarianship.”
