Formerly known as the Minnesota Society for Interest in Science Fiction and Fantasy (a.k.a. MiSFiTS), we changed our name to better reflect our growing community and purpose! From our educational initiative of bringing science into local classrooms, to a movie club, to things as simple as an ice cream social, we've always believed that there are great opportunities for service, community, and fun, even if we have to create them.
Since 1982, Make-A-Wish Minnesota has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. From its humble beginning, Make-A-Wish Minnesota now grants a wish every 27 hours - making a life-changing impact on not only wish kids, but also families, friends, donors, sponsors and sometimes even entire communities. With the US military officially out of Iraq, almost 9 years of war and occupation symbolically end. But it's not over for the millions of Iraqis who still lack access to clean water and reliable electricity, are living as refugees, or dealing with trauma-related disorders. Americans, too, need a way to heal and move forward. Instead of focusing on what has been lost, we need to look toward the future - how can American and Iraqi civilians partner to help rebuild Iraq and rebuild lives? The Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project is a nonprofit organization committed to long-term civilian partnerships that support healing and reconciliation. The American Indian Movement Interpretive Center holds a legacy of millions of historical records, culture captured on media, radio archives, photographs and the testimony of living elders who want the story of the American Indian Movement told. This permanent collection of the modern history of American Indians will be identified, collected, organized and preserved for the Minnesota public, especially children. Document, records, media, photographs, posters, art and objects will be available and on display. Academic and other researchers will have access to original charter filings, nonprofit Articles of Incorporation, AIM Patrol jackets, minutes of the earliest AIM organizing meetings, photographs of victims of police beatings, and audio interviews with historic figures who are now deceased. AIM-founded organizations will be asked to consider sharing their historical records with the Interpretive Center. The records will yield an expanded history of the work of organizations that were envisioned by AIM, and took their own paths of development and service to the community.
We seek to provide objective information in an accessible format that clarifies complex issues and increases people's understanding and capacity to make sound environmental decisions.
Metro Meals on Wheels is the association of 32 Meals on Wheels programs in the Twin Cities metro area. With our program partners, we lead the effort to make sure people in our community receive the nutritious meals and the human connection they need to help them live independently. Meals on Wheels is a community-based service that provides fresh, nutritious meals delivered directly to the homes of seniors and individuals with disabilities throughout the Twin Cities. In addition to regularly providing healthy foods, caring volunteers provide social connection that helps meal recipients remain living independently in their own homes. With the help of Meals on Wheels programs, seniors and people with disabilities get the nourishment and human connection needed to support daily activities, while reducing the need for medical support. For some recipients, these daily meals are the difference between living in their own homes and moving to a nursing home. Meals on Wheels could not exist without the help of volunteers who deliver the meals and donors who help those who cannot afford it pay for the meals.

| RAISE MONEY, GIVE A SCHOLARSHIP. | It's that easy. Every dollar raised is given to a student in rural Tanzania in the form of a scholarship, who can't otherwise afford the fees for continuing education. When every $600 is raised, a scholarship is covered for a student of Ketumbeine Secondary School for one year. Our goal is to provide full, 3-year commitment scholarships for as many students as possible. -Ketumbeine Secondary School- Ketumbeine is a village in Northern Tanzania. This is only one of thousands of villages where resources are lacking. By providing the opportunity for further education, we can help students reach their full potential. Sustainable change can only begin at a local level. -Scholarship Disbursement- Ketumbeine Scholarship Fund is partnered with a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization called Operation Bootstrap that has been giving scholarships like these on a global scale since 1965. At Rescue Now Services Inc., our philosophy is to give struggling families one less thing to worry about by helping these families put food on their table. We know that our organization alone, cannot reach all those that are hungry thus we partner with like-minded organizations and create programs to assist food insecure individuals and families to feed their family. Our programs reach over 1,100 individuals each month.
Meda provides one-on-one business consulting, access to capital, and market opportunities. Since its beginning in 1971, Meda has helped over 20,000 minority entrepreneurs and assisted in the startup of more than 500 businesses. In addition, Meda hosts the Minnesota Procurement Technical Assistance Center (Meda PTAC) that helps all Minnesota businesses pursue government procurement opportunities. Meda PTAC offers specialized support for Women, Veteran, and HUB Zone businesses. Meda also operates a business development center under cooperative agreement with the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Minneapolis MBDA Business Center connects Minnesota Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs) with business opportunities. Meda is also a U.S. Department of the Treasury certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI).
Pathways To Children was founded by Grace Strangis as a result of her many years of traveling the world with her Corporate Travel Agency. She grew up with limited opportunities in a small Minnesota farming community and had no concept of the broader world needs and that so much of the world was engulfed in poverty. After seeing the thousands of orphaned and abandoned children on the street with no school or medical care, she decided the best way she could help was to use her vast travel knowledge and travel coordination skills to bring volunteers to see, hear, touch and hold this vast segment of humanity. In making people aware of the extreme poverty of this world she felt they would want to help. She also recognized the opportunity to raise funds for the NGO’s (Non Government Agencies) that are working to provide for the needs of the needs of these children and their families. The result is that the volunteers who accompany Grace not only change the life of a child but their lives are also changed forever! Volunteers provide not only the “human touch” but also expertise in their field. They also are inspired and inspire others when they return to provide financial support which has enabled Pathways to Children to financially support it’s projects of schools, medical facilities and orphanages.
This community-based, volunteer-run organization usually puts on one major production in the early spring with a full orchestra and chorus. In addition, its singers perform with the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra each summer in a shortened, concert version of one of the operettas. The company also serves as a resource on G&S for the community, occasionally lending orchestral parts and dispensing advice.
Ethiopia Reads: Cultivating minds for a stronger tomorrow.
Twenty six years ago, the Page Education Foundation (PEF) launched an inspiration: invite promising students of color to continue their education, and they will accept. Since its inception in 1988, PEF has parlayed this innovative idea into a catalyst for shaping the education and social responsibility of vibrant young people of color. We do this by enticing college-age youth to positively influence younger children of color. In exchange for their volunteer service to children, PEF offers Page Scholars professional mentoring and financial assistance for college. The program has grown from providing funding to ten students in 1988 to 525 students today, and over 5,500 in the past 26 years. These exceptional young people have given more than 350,000 service hours to younger children in an effort to positively influence their future education. Our vibrant community and dedication to service does not end once Page Scholars graduate. Our alumni stay connected to the Foundation by serving on our Advisory Board, providing professional development opportunities to current Page Scholars, making financial contributions, and volunteering at various PEF events throughout the year.
