The United States Naval Academy is a four-year coeducational federal service academy in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. Established in 1845 under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, it is the second oldest of the United States' five service academies, and educates officers for commissioning primarily into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The 338acre campus is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, 33mi east of Washington, D.C. and 26mi southeast of Baltimore. The entire campus is a National Historic Landmark and home to many historic sites, buildings, and monuments. It replaced Philadelphia Naval Asylum, in Philadelphia, that served as the first United States Naval Academy from 1838 to 1845 when the Naval Academy formed in Annapolis.Candidates for admission generally must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a Member of Congress. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as midshipmen. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer, but only about 1,000 midshipmen graduate. Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, but a small number can also be cross-commissioned as officers in other U.S. services, and the services of allied nations. The United States Naval Academy has some of the highest paid graduates in the country according to starting salary. The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades midshipmen's performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Midshipmen are required to adhere to the academy's Honor Concept.
St. John's College is a private liberal arts college known for its distinctive curriculum centered on reading and discussing the Great Books of Western Civilization. It has two U.S. campuses: one in Annapolis, Maryland, and one in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The College is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States. It traces its origins to King William's School, a preparatory school founded in 1696, and received a collegiate charter under its present name in 1784. In 1937, it adopted a Great Books curriculum known as the New Program, based on discussion of works from the Western canon of philosophical, religious, historical, mathematical, scientific, and literary works; it is probably for this program that the school is best known.The school grants only one bachelor's degree, in Liberal Arts. Two master's degrees are available through the college's Graduate Institute—one in Liberal Arts, which is a modified version of the undergraduate curriculum (differing mostly in that the graduate students are not restricted to a set sequence of courses), and one in Eastern Classics, which applies most of the features of the undergraduate curriculum (seminars, preceptorials, language study and a set sequence of courses) to a list of classic works from India, China and Japan. The Master of Arts in Eastern Classics is only available at the Santa Fe campus. Despite its name, the College has no religious affiliation.
There is no other college quite like St. John's. Through sustained engagement with the works of great thinkers and through genuine discussion with peers, students at St. John’s College cultivate habits of mind that last a lifetime. The interdisciplinary curriculum focuses on the foundational works of philosophy, literature, history, political science, theology, economics, music, mathematics, and the laboratory sciences. Classes are small, with between 14 and 20 students, and are conducted as seminars; the faculty-student ratio is 1:8. Students develop strong critical thinking skills through their close interaction with faculty and as they delve deeply into the most important and influential works of all time. The college also offers a graduate-level program based on these same principles. For more than a century, the U.S. Naval Academy Association & Foundation has worked to advance the interests, priorities and mission of the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1886, Lieutenant Commander Charles Belknap, Class of 1867, formed the U.S. Naval Academy Graduates Association. The first dinner was held during June Week, 1886; thereafter meetings were held almost every year for 40 years. As the Association grew, so did its need for resources. Through the generous efforts of the Association's chapters, an endowment was established to help fund the organization, hire staff, create programs and eventually create Shipmate, which would help “bind the ties” of alumni. In 1931, the Association’s Board of Governors formed a new organization that would include non-graduates as well as graduates of the Naval Academy in its membership. In May 1931, the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association was incorporated in Washington, DC. On 6 October 1947, the Alumni Association was incorporated in the state of Maryland. With each passing year, alumni, staff and the wider USNA community have contributed to the rich and distinguished history of the Association & Foundation. 2.48.005 - Education Commission. A. There is created an Education Commission. The Commission shall consist of at least one Alderman or Alderwoman from the City Council and one resident from each of the eight Wards of the City and an additional four at-large members who reside in the Annapolis cluster schools as defined by Anne Arundel County Public Schools and possess a demonstrated interest or expertise in education. Such residents and at-large members shall include public and private educators at any level of education, active members of parent/student/teacher organizations, student advocates, and active members of organized groups demonstrating a strong interest in education. Additional volunteer (non-sworn) members shall be encouraged to attend and participate in the Commission's meetings. All members, Aldermen and Alderwomen, and residents, of the Education Commission shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The chair shall be appointed by the Mayor. The term of the Alderman/Alderwoman or Aldermen/Alderwomen shall be identical with his or her term of office. Each resident member shall serve for a term of up to three years, or until the member's successor is appointed and qualified, commencing on the first day of July; the Mayor shall set the initial terms so that the term of no more than one-third of the members expires each year. B. The Commission shall meet monthly and special meetings may be called by the chair. No fewer than two working days' notice shall be given prior to each meeting. A written agenda shall be prepared for each meeting. Revisions may be made only by unanimous consent of the members present. Action of the Commission shall be by majority vote of the members present. A majority of the members of the Commission shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business. All policy, program, and administrative actions taken by the Commission shall have the concurrence of a majority vote of the membership. C. The purpose of the Education Commission shall be to make recommendations to the Anne Arundel County Board of Education and the Superintendent and to the State Board of Education concerning the Annapolis School feeder system, serve as the primary liaison between City and the County Board of Education and elected officials, and work with other governmental, private, and non-governmental organizations to obtain educational opportunities, resources and facilities for the citizens of Annapolis. D. The Education Commission shall hold public hearings and otherwise solicit public input on initiatives being considered by or that should be considered by the County Board of Education. The Commission shall make recommendations to the County Board of Education concerning educational needs of Annapolis. At least semi-annually, or as is necessary to accomplish specific goals, the Commission shall report to the City Council on activities and accomplishments of the Commission and routinely offer for City Council consideration various recommendations for improving education in the City of Annapolis. A liaison chosen by the chair shall routinely attend County Board of Education meetings. At least annually, the Commission shall report to the City Council on activities and accomplishments of the Commission and recommendations for City Council.
About the Maryland Judiciary COURTS District Court - Most people experience the court system through the District Court. Cases heard here include motor vehicle (traffic) and boating violations and other misdemeanors and specified felonies, domestic violence and peace order petitions, landlord-tenant disputes, small claims and other civil cases involving limited dollar amounts, and replevin (recovery of wrongfully taken or detained goods). Each county and the City of Baltimore has at least one District Court location. A case in the District Court is argued before a judge only: there are no jury trials in District Court. Circuit Court – Generally handles more serious criminal cases, major civil cases, including juvenile and other family law cases such as divorce, custody and child support and most cases appealed from the District Court, orphans’ courts and certain administrative agencies. Circuit courts also hear domestic violence cases. Each County and the City of Baltimore has a circuit court. Cases may involve juries or sometimes are heard by a judge only. Appellate Courts – Maryland has two appellate courts: the Court of Appeals, the highest court, and the Court of Special Appeals, the intermediate appellate court. These courts review a trial court’s (District or Circuit Court) actions and decisions in given cases and decide whether the trial judge properly followed the law and legal precedent. Orphans’ Court – This specialized court handles wills, estates, and other probate matters and limited aspects of guardianship.

The Chesapeake Bay Commission is a policy leader in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. As a tri-state legislative assembly representing Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, the Commission's leadership covers a full spectrum of Bay issues: from managing living resources and conserving land, to protecting water quality. By combining its unique access to both the legislative and executive branches of each Bay state with well-honed skills in research, policy-development and consensus building, the Commission has achieved consistently strong and effective results in pursuit of Bay restoration goals. Twenty-one members from three states define the Commission's identity and its workload. Fifteen are legislators, five each from Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania, who are responsible for identifying the needs of the Bay, hearing the wishes of their constituents and determining actions that make better stewards of all of us. Completing their ranks are the governors of each state, represented by cabinet members who are directly responsible for managing their states' natural resources, as well as three citizen representatives who bring with them a unique perspective and expertise. Each calendar year, the chairmanship of the Commission rotates among the states. In January 2015, Maryland turned the gavel over to Virginia with the election of Delegate L. Scott Lingamfelter as Chairman. The Chesapeake Bay Commission was created in 1980 to coordinate Bay-related policy across state lines and to develop shared solutions. The catalyst for our creation was the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) landmark seven-year study (1976-1983) on the decline of the Chesapeake Bay. With over a quarter-century of work behind it, the Commission has earned its reputation as a regional, bi-partisan leader. It has made remarkable strides in learning the complex workings of an enormous estuary, determining the federal and state actions that are needed to sustain its living resources, and persuading its colleagues in the general assemblies and executive branches to take action. Today, despite over two decades of effort, restoration continues to face daunting challenges. Having piloted Chesapeake 2000 (C2K) to its successful adoption during more financially solvent times, the Chesapeake Bay Commission must now help to stay the course by ensuring that sufficient resources are committed and equitable policies are adopted that will keep the restoration effort on track.
