Marygrove College is an independent, Catholic, liberal arts college located in Detroit, Michigan. The college is sponsored by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.HistoryThe College grew out of a postgraduate tutorial offered to one young woman graduate of St. Mary's Academy in Monroe, Michigan, in 1899. By 1905 it had grown to a two-year college for women, and in 1910 it was a four-year college chartered to grant degrees. It was then known as St. Mary's College. The College moved to its current location in Detroit in 1927, and at that time became known as Marygrove College. When it moved to Detroit its president was George Hermann Derry, who was the first lay person to serve as a president of a Catholic women's college in the United States.In the decades after World War I, Marygrove College was an important local center of Catholic social action. Faculty members were chosen for their education, character, and faith, and President Derry encouraged each student to look beyond the prospect of eventual marriage and to become capable of "doing her part in the world's work in whatever sphere of life she may be placed". By 1936, the college catalog spoke in far more emphatic terms of female independence. In 1937, Sister Honora Jack became the College's first woman president. The College accepted its first black student in 1938.Marygrove College was originally a women's college. It became co-educational in about 1970 during the presidency of Arthur Brown.Glenda D. Price was appointed as the college's first African-American woman president in 1988. Dr. Price retired in 2006 and continues to be active in Detroit's community revival, most recently with her appointment to the city's financial advisory board.

The Gallery opened in Febuary 2001, and has had a full schedule of exhibtions since then. The space has 14 foot high ceilings and ten foot high windows, which create a spacious and well lit environment. A distinguishing feature of the Gallery is the solid bronze grillwork at the entrance of the exhibit space. The Gallery is located on the fourth floor of the Liberal Arts building. The Gallery Hours: Monday - Friday: 10AM - 5PM Saturday: 9AM - 3PM [or by appointment] The Beyond Words gallery is a smaller gallery located on the first floor of the Liberal Arts building. The Master of Arts in the Teaching of Mathematics (MATM) degree is a 33 credit hour program is designed for graduate students interested in teaching mathematics at the K-12 level. Students can choose from two concentrations: Mathematics Education or Software Engineering Education.

This year of the UDM’s First Year Experience (FYE) Common Read, we’ve designed the program to introduce you—as a first-year student—to the academic and intellectual culture of the University of Detroit Mercy through a common reading experience. All first-year students are expected to read the book over the summer and participate in discussions during fall orientation, Prologues, Transitions, and Viewpoints (PTV), and various other activities planned during the fall term. The 2011 Common Read selection is The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch.

Electrical, electronics and computer engineers find innovative ways to use electricity and computers to improve people’s lives. UDM taps into your creativity so you can apply theoretical concepts to find innovative solutions to new problems. By working with hands-on projects which explore a series of robotic, sensor, and/or communication systems you combine electrical and computer engineering concepts with practical applications. We teach you engineering theory through an integrated and applied approach, so you learn how concepts work together - as they would in the "real world." Additionally, our upperclassmen and graduate students work on the design and development of an internationally competitive autonomous vehicle to participate in the International Ground Vehicle Competition (www.IGVC.org). We distribute new and gently used children’s books throughout Detroit with the help of our community partners, including low-income health and dental clinics, Head Start programs, local schools, and homeless shelters. Religion is a topic that is most talked about but very misunderstood. Conversations among different faith traditions become very difficult. Studying religions at University of Detroit Mercy provides many opportunities to explore many facets of this dynamic aspect of human life. "Religious Studies” is an umbrella designation covering multiple disciplines and various traditions. In terms of religious traditions, Religious Studies generally includes the study of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hindu traditions, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Shinto, and some more. In terms of disciplines, literary, historical, philosophical, linguistic, psychological, sociological, anthropological, and theological methods are used. The common element is the study of human activities and ideas influenced by and influencing religious traditions. Given the interdisciplinary and multicultural nature of Religious Studies, students with diverse backgrounds and interests may find fulfillments in this field. Students may find themselves interested in delving deep into one religious tradition, or in developing a broad appreciation of religious vibrancy and diversity that exist in human cultures. They may want to employ one particular method to study religions systematically, or they may want to use multiple disciplines in order to study different aspects of a religion. They may find knowledge of and about religions useful in understanding societies and cultures, and they may also find the subjects of study personally edifying.

Shiple Hall Shiple Hall can accommodate approx. 360 students. It is a 7-story traditional style residence hall, with men & women occupying the top six floors. The residence floors have community bathrooms with double rooms off a common corridor. Each floor also has a social lounge with comfortable furniture and a television, plus a smaller study lounge with the study tables and chairs. Holden Hall Holden can accommodate 140 students on three floors. It is a traditional style residence hall with community bathrooms and double rooms off a common corridor. Located off of the main entrance, it features a hardwood floor, comfortable furniture, and a wide screen television. It is a common site for many of Holden's Hall activities, and a great hangout space. Located on the ground floor are the kitchen, dining, laundry, and game rooms. Quadrangle Complex (Quads) Constructed in the late 1960's, the Quads can house about 440 upper-class students. The complex consists of four 4-story residence halls surrounding a single Commons building. The buildings are connected at the basement level to the Quads Commons building. The Quads offer suite arrangements, where two double rooms share a single bathroom. The rooms in the Quads are tiled and air-conditioned.
