The Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School, also referred to as LREI, was founded by Elisabeth Irwin in 1921 in Manhattan, New York City as the Little Red School House, and is regarded as the city's first progressive school. Created as a joint public-private educational experiment, the school tested principles of progressive education that had been advocated since the turn of the 20th century by John Dewey. The founders postulated that the lessons of progressive education could be applied successfully in the crowded, ethnically diverse public schools of the nation's largest city.HistoryIn 1932, after the onset of the Great Depression caused the Public Education Association to withdraw the funding that had allowed the school to exist within the New York City public school system, William O'Shea, the superintendent of schools - who had previously tried to close down the program because of its progressive ideas - announced that the school would be eliminated because of a budgetary crisis. Parents raised sufficient funds to pay for salaries, but O'Shea refused to accept the money, and the school was forced to turn to private funding. It moved to a building on Bleecker Street provided at no cost by the First Presbyterian Church and began a new life as an independent school.The Little Red School House consists of a lower school, a middle school, and a high school. In the 1940s the Little Red School House's high-school students decided they wanted their school to be named after its founder, Elisabeth Irwin, making the full title of the institution The Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School.
Grace Church School at 86 Fourth Avenue between East 10th and 12th Streets in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was founded in 1894 by Grace Church as the first choir boarding school in New York City.[1] The day school began in 1934.[1] In 1947 Grace became a co-educational school and was admitted to the Guild of Independent Schools of New York City. In the following decade the school began to expand its facilities to accommodate a growing student body. From the original 16 choristers, Grace has grown to its current enrollment of over 400 boys and girls drawn from a wide variety of ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds. It offers complete secondary education from pre-K to eighth grade.[2] While the school has continued its close relationship with Grace Church, since 1972 it has been governed by an independent Board of Trustees, and it is a fully accredited member of the New York State Association of Independent Schools and the National Association of Independent Schools. In 2006, the School became a legal entity separate from the Church, and now owns the buildings at 84-96 Fourth Avenue, including the historic and landmarked church houses Clergy House, Memorial House and Neighborhood House.[3]

Our school prides itself on being a clean welcoming environment. In order to maintain our facility we follow the Department of Health guidelines. Capoeira Luanda practices a style of Capoeira known as Capoeira Regional Contemporanea. This style is derived from movements and sequences developed by Mestre Bimba, as well as influences and evolutions of Capoeira from the founding Mestre of Capoeira Luanda. Capoeira Luanda was founded on April 6th, 2007, after a long process of research and study under the direction and guidance of Mestre Jelon Vieira. Today, Capoeira Luanda has spread internationally with centers and academies in the United States, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Spain, France, Peru, Colombia, Italy, and Turkey. The root of the name Luanda is a homage to Mestre Eziquiel Martins, who founded the Grupo Luanda de Capoeira in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil in 1963. Another inspiration behind the name Luanda was meaning of the word Luanda in Yoruba language which means “the junction of the moon and the earth” and “Peace and imaginary land” in the dialect Bantu. Luanda is the capital of Angola and was one of the most important ports during the slave trade when Africans were taken to the Americas as chattel. Luanda is one of the cities in West Africa where Africans said the last good bye for those who never returned. It was the Africans from the slave trade that contributed to the richness of the African Culture in Brazil.

Since 1969, IAR in NYC has taught audio recording, audio engineering, and post production. Our grads pursue careers in music recording, production, live sound, radio/TV/film, and more. Trained specialists are with you in each class, grads can return for complimentary re-training, and placement extends beyond graduation. Our balanced program focuses on practice and theory, using Pro Tools, MIDI training, recording in our studio, advanced mixing, and much more. Federal Title IV grants/loans, school scholarships, extended payment plans and Veterans aid are available if you qualify. We are both NYS licensed and ACCSC accredited.
