The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is an American public research university located in the Las Vegas suburb of Paradise, Nevada. The 332acre campus is located approximately 1.6mi east of the Las Vegas Strip. The university includes the Shadow Lane Campus, located just east of the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, which houses the School of Dental Medicine— the only dental school in the state of Nevada. In addition, UNLV's law school, the William Boyd School of Law, is also the only law school in the state.Noted for its strong emphasis on science and technology, business management, and the law programs, the university is classified a "research-intensive university" by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The William Harrah College of Hotel Administration is annually ranked among the top hospitality programs in the United States due to the university's proximity to the Las Vegas Strip. Its famed Thomas & Mack Center hosted the 2007 NBA All-Star Game, concerts, as well as lectures by Bill Clinton and Mikhail Gorbachev as part of various UNLV-affiliated lecture series.

Spurred by the vision of William D. Carlson, the first dean of Nevada Southern, the School of Education was established in 1957. A decade later it became the College of Education under Founding Dean Anthony Saville, offering programs in elementary, secondary, and vocational education and administration. In 1964, the first graduating class of 25 received bachelor's degrees; three years later, nine students received the first master's degrees; and in 1977, five students received doctoral degrees. By 1981, the college had received full accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The college moved into its own building, later named for Carlson, in 1972.
The Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media is a media unit within the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs. The William S. Boyd School of Law has over 450 students and offers three juris doctor degree programs: a full-time, day program, a part-time day program, and a part-time evening program, and three dual degree programs: a J.D./MBA, a J.D./M.S.W. and a J.D./Ph.D. It is fully accredited by the American Bar Association and a member of the American Association of Law Schools.
