The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world with one of the highest densities of clinical facilities for patient care, basic science, and translational research. Located in Houston the center contains 54 medicine-related institutions, consisting of 21 hospitals and eight specialty institutions, eight academic and research institutions, four medical schools, seven nursing schools, three public health organizations, 2 pharmacy schools and a dental school. Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center is the private adult hospital of the Baylor College of Medicine jointly owned with CHI St. Luke’s Health. The medical staff at the hospital includes full-time Baylor faculty, as well as community physicians. The hospital is currently located at the former St. Luke’s Medical Center, located on Bertner Street in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. The hospital is an 850-bed institution that is also a clinical partner of the Texas Heart Institute.HistoryThe hospital was originally chartered as a 180 bed, non-profit, general hospital in 1945. The charter increased to 300 beds within the first decade, and eventually to 850 beds. In 1962, the hospital affiliated with the Texas Heart Institute (THI). In 1997, the hospital was established as the flagship hospital for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, as part of the non-profit St. Luke's Episcopal Health System (SLEH). In 2004, SLEH entered into an agreement with the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) to become its primary adult teaching hospital. In 2013, the hospital was acquired as part of the Catholic Health Initiatives $2 billion purchase of the St. Luke's Episcopal Health System. The health system was renamed as CHI St. Luke's Health System, and the flagship hospital renamed as St. Luke's Medical Center.In January 2014, BCM and CHI St. Luke's Health agreed to be joint owners of St. Luke's Medical Center. The hospital was accordingly renamed as the Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center (TMC campus). The original Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center building on the McNair campus—unfinished and used primarily as an outpatient center at the time—was also agreed on to become a part of the joint ownership, and will be called the Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center (McNair campus) once completed, expected to open in 2015 initially with 250 beds. The McNair campus also has an outpatient component, which Baylor owns and operates independently. Wayne Keathley serves as the current president of the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Historically, the Ovarian Cancer Awareness Quilt Project at MD Anderson was established to educate the public about the risk factors and symptoms of ovarian cancer through the artistry of quilting. Catherine Ellison designed the beautiful teal ribbon quilt block. The project raised awareness about the risk factors and symptoms of this disease. Since 2002, quilters from MD Anderson’s Ovarian Cancer Support Group and the community have donated blocks to make quilts which are displayed each year at the International Quilt Festival in Houston. All who have been touched by ovarian cancer, including survivors, family members and friends, have been invited to contribute a block. Quilters and quilt shops from across the country and local quilt guilds have created and donated hundreds of quilt blocks and entire quilts. With the growth of the quilt project, an online quilt auction was launched in 2008. Due to the success of the first online quilt auction, which featured 68 quilts and raised $11,440, a second online quilt auction was hosted in October of 2009 which featured 107 quilts and raised $25,120.

MD Anderson has been leading the way in pioneering inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) treatment. Since 2006, MD Anderson has been treating patients in the Morgan Welch Inflammatory Breast Cancer Clinic, dedicated exclusively for women with IBC. The IBC team includes physicians from every specialty to provide expert guidance in all aspects of IBC treatment, including pathology, imaging, chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy. The Morgan Welch Inflammatory Breast Cancer Clinic accepts both newly diagnosed and previously treated IBC patients, and we have clinics for new patients every day. Treatment is individualized to each patient, and the multidisciplinary IBC team oversees every aspect of the treatment and care plan. Patients will also have access to clinical trials that offer novel therapies to treat this rare disease. Our international tissue registry includes tumor samples from all over the world and represents a crucial resource to help understand and potentially lead to a cure for inflammatory breast cancer. MD Anderson Morgan Welch IBC Clinic does not require a physician referral for appointment, although some insurance companies may require referrals. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Prevention Research Training Program prepares health scientists and clinicians to assume leadership roles as research investigators in the field of cancer prevention and control. The program's multidisciplinary emphasis expands the perspective of the trainees by moving from their base of strength in a particular specialty (e.g., medical oncology, molecular genetics, behavioral science) to equip them with basic knowledge in the other disciplines in cancer prevention and control research. Trainees learn the relevant principles, research methods and analytic approaches used by these other disciplines. This multi-disciplinary training is accomplished through specific graduate courses, our seminar series, and by participation in ongoing peer-reviewed, mentored research. The Sprint for Life 5K Run/Walk and Sprint for Sprouts Kids’ Run on the campus of MD Anderson Cancer Center is held annually to raise awareness for ovarian cancer and funds for much need research. The NeuroPsychiatric Center (NPC) is a crisis and emergency center that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is the main public mental health emergency program in Harris County. The NPC serves over 10,000 consumers a year. Adults, adolescents, and children come to the NPC for help. Many of those served are indigent or uninsured. Individuals seeking services may come voluntarily or may be brought to the NPC by law enforcement.
The Transition Medicine Clinic at Baylor College of Medicine provides medical care and social support services to the growing population of adolescents/young adults with a chronic childhood illness or disability as they move from pediatric to adult healthcare. The clinic serves the needs of adolescents and young adults diagnosed with a chronic childhood disease or disability, including but not limited to, spina bifida, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, congenital heart disease, autism, attention deficit hypertensive disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, long-term cancer survivors, and other genetic diseases.
The Behavioral Health and Addictions Research Program (BHARP) resides in the Family and Community Medicine Department at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and is directed by Angela Stotts, PhD. Dr. Stotts is a clinical psychologist and researcher specializing in behavioral and pharmacological treatments for substance use disorders, including nicotine dependence. She has been a principal or co-investigator on multiple treatment-research studies funded by NIH and other federal agencies. Specifically, she has had NIDA and NCI funding to test novel motivational interviewing and acceptance/mindfulness-based interventions for pregnant smokers and opiate abusers. She also has had HRSA funding to test a hospital-based intervention to reduce secondhand smoke in families with an infant at high respiratory risk in the neonatal intensive care unit. Dr. Stotts holds a cross-appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, as well as an appointment in the Center for Clinical Research and Evidence-Based Medicine. She is the Director of the Research Division in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, as well as the Director of the Behavioral Health and Addiction Research Program within this Division. Dr. Stotts also supervises resident research projects and serves as a mentor to new investigators. Staff members include: Thomas F.
