Current home to the Martini Brother's Burger Bar, the McKelvey Art Gallery, Identity Blend Marketing, in addition to serving as an art and business incubator. Built in 1909 by Wick, Salow, and Wells for the primary tenant S.H. Knox 5 and dime The Wicks purchased the property in the earliest planning of the city. S.H. Knox 5 and dime presence on the property extends back to at least 1892, making it one of the earliest stores belonging to a multi state retail chain. Knox was a cousin to the Woolworth’s. In 1884, he opened his first store in Reading, PA with F.W. & Sum Woolworth. The partnership continued, opening stores in Newark, Erie, and Buffalo, before Knox bought out his cousins. In 1890 he established headquarters in Buffalo and proceeded to build in his own successful retail chain before re-merging with the Woolworths to form one company in 1912. The IPO raised 30 million dollars. Cash was used to build the Woolworth Building in NYC,one of the first skyscrapers and the tallest in the world until 1930. Knox remained integral in the Woolworth empire, serving as Vice President until his death in 1915. The store at 110 West Federal was renamed Woolworth in 1912 as part of the merger. In the early 1950s it was significantly remodeled and a porcelain enamel facade put over the brick. After Woolworth’s closed in 1984, Rite-aid purchased the building. After Rite-Aid’s closing in 1999, an office supply store briefly occupied the space briefly before until the Rosetta Stone Cafe opened in 2007. It lasted until the fall of 2010. After incubating for three years in tiny confines two doors down, the Lemon Grove reopening the building in 2012. The goal of the Lemon Grove LLC is to revive 110 West Federal to full occupancy, true to the historic architecture.
