Founded by Artistic Director Shakina Nayfack, The Musical Theatre Factory is dedicated to helping musical theatre artists (writers, composers, performers, choreographers, directors) develop and present new work in a collaborative atmosphere free from the pressures of critical or financial success. We accomplish this goal by identifying new works and artists of promise, then facilitating a development process that includes readings, concerts, workshops, and public performances of new musical theatre projects. Looking Glass Theatre is dedicated to Peter Brook's idea of "Rough Theater," where, he says, "a bucket will be banged for a battle," the theatre of "the torn sheet pinned up across the hall, the battered screen to conceal the quick changes." Rough Theatre never hides the mechanics of the stage but celebrates them with the audience. Equally important in our work is exploring a feminine aesthetic. In concrete terms, this means that we have a female artist at the core of every project. Aesthetically, we try to insure that women do not allow their natural instincts to be sublimated by the desire to please the male dominated commercial market. Our goal is to create a community of artistic freedom: freedom from the pressure to be commercial, freedom from gender expectations and freedom from judgment. We believe this is the way to bring our audience aesthetic bliss. Supporting inspiration without expectations gets creative juices flowing. This pure creative energy then creates the purest entertainment.
