The Graduate Center of the City University of New York is a public American research college based in New York City, and is the principal doctoral-granting institution of the CUNY system. The school is situated in a nine-story landmark building at 365 Fifth Avenue at the corner of 34th Street in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan, across the corner from the Empire State Building. The Graduate Center has 4,600 students, 33 doctoral programs, 7 master's programs, and 30 research centers and institutes. Zoni Language Centers was founded by Mr. Zoilo C. Nieto, President & founder, in 1991. Zoni is a multi-site institution with campuses in Manhattan, Queens, New Jersey, Miami Beach and Vancouver where Intensive English Programs (IEP) and other English language related courses are offered. Since 1991, Zoni has taught English to hundred of thousands of students, educating them to speak, read and write in English in a short period of time. Zoni uses a variety of effective teaching methods applied by college-educated teachers. Zoni is certified by the New York State Education Department, is accredited by ACCET in Miami Beach and accredited by Languages Canada in Vancouver, Canada. The American Academy of Dramatic Arts is a two-year performing arts conservatory with bi-coastal facilities at 120 Madison Avenue, Manhattan, and at 1336 North La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles.HistoryThe oldest acting school in the English speaking world, the Academy in New York City was founded in 1884 to train actors for the stage. Its first home was the original Lyceum Theatre on what is now Park Avenue South. In 1963, the school moved to its current home, a landmark building designed by noted architect Stanford White as the original Colony Club.In 1974, the Academy opened another campus in Pasadena, California, which made it the only professional actor training school in both major centers of American theatrical activity. The Los Angeles campus moved from Pasadena to Hollywood in 2001 in a new building next to the site of the former studios of Charlie Chaplin.ProgramThe Academy remains dedicated to training professional actors. It offers a two-year program in which students have to be invited back for the second year. Auditions are held at the end of the second year for the third year company. Students in Comparative Literature come from over twenty-five countries and are native speakers of as many languages. They bring a range of cultural and intellectual interests and have given the program in Comparative Literature at the Graduate Center an international character second to none that mirrors New York City in all its depth and complexity. While the majority of students tend to emphasize modernism in their coursework and dissertations, a significant number pursue studies in other periods, especially in Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic literatures, as well as in the literatures of the Americas. In recent years our students have accepted teaching positions at Barnard, Williams, Yale, Hamilton, Mount Holyoke, Vanderbilt, Harvard, UCLA, Penn State, Rutgers, The University of Massachusetts, and at a number of CUNY colleges. They have also found positions in Italy, Germany, and Turkey. BGIA provides a unique opportunity for college students and recent college graduates from around the world to take advanced courses in international affairs while working in carefully selected internships based on individual interests—all while experiencing life in Manhattan, the island at the center of the world. BGIA is designed for students of all academic majors. The program offers international affairs courses in an intimate teaching environment. Our faculty’s experience in the field of international affairs and at prestigious universities brings real-world expertise into the classroom. With BGIA’s internship program, students are matched with private, public, and nonprofit organizations in New York City. In addition, BGIA makes it possible for students to take advantage of New York City’s vast array of cultural offerings. Through internships, faculty contacts, and BGIA’s extensive alumni network, students develop a community that extends beyond the duration of the program to provide excellent support to recent graduates. BGIA was founded by the late diplomatic historian James Clarke Chace, the Managing Editor of Foreign Affairs and the World Policy Journal, and Paul W. Williams Professor of Government and Public Law at Bard College. BGIA honors Chace’s legacy with the James Clarke Chace speaker series.
