A+ Colorado (formerly A+ Denver) is an independent, nonprofit organization committed to ensuring every Colorado student can access an excellent education. A+ is an "action tank." We use the power of data and research to advocate for district and systems-level policies that will accelerate learning for all students. Operating at the confluence of practice, policy, and politics, we challenge ourselves, educators, and policymakers to rethink public education. We envision a system of forward-thinking, rigorous, diverse school models that prepare students for college and career; effective district management that holds schools accountable to high standards; and a system of choice whereby families are empowered to find the right high-quality educational opportunity for their child. A+ exists to ensure a child’s zip code no longer dictates his or her educational opportunity. Our ultimate goal is to ensure that every student in Colorado receives an excellent public education. Our kids deserve it, and our collective prosperity depends on it.

Program Overview Since 1946, Denver Kids, Inc. has provided educational counseling and mentoring to thousands of Denver Public School (DPS) students, grades K-12. Each child is provided with the support and guidance that most effectively minimizes the risk factors that are impeding academic success. The program strives to help each student achieve his or her potential by offering encouragement and addressing the factors that promote healthy social, physical, and mental development. Denver Kids, Inc. is a preventive counseling and mentoring program that currently provides one-to-one guidance to over 1,000 students in DPS. Additional programs include Future Options, Parent Engagement and Enrichment Activities. School personnel, who recognize that the students’ problems extend beyond those that the schools' resources can address, refer students to Denver Kids, Inc. Each full-time Denver Kids, Inc. educational counselor works with a caseload of 55 to 65 students. They see students on a weekly to semi-monthly basis and are often the most stabilizing influence in the child’s life. Referrals of students are encouraged in the elementary years, as research has shown that long term consistent support of at-risk students is most effective. On average, a student is in the program for eight years. Once a student has entered the program, Denver Kids, Inc. is committed to supporting the child through high school graduation as long as he or she remains a student of DPS. Denver Kids, Inc. is successful in helping students achieve academic success through constant reinforcement of positive behaviors, exposure to a myriad of opportunities, and encouragement of academic achievement and attendance.

Cottonwood Institute’s mission is to connect underserved students to the outdoors and empower them to take action to improve their schools, the community, and the environment for future generations. Cottonwood Institute collaborates with schools and youth organizations—primarily for middle and high school students—to provide high quality, high impact environmental education and service-learning programs. ur programs empower students to ignite change, not just talk about it. Cottonwood Institute’s change theory is: Gift + Issue = Change. Every student has a gift and when they apply it to an issue they are passionate about, they will change themselves. That change will ripple out to their friends and family; their schools and communities; the environment; and the world.
Book Trust is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to empower children from low-income families to choose and own books, inspiring a passion for reading and cultivating increased literacy skills and life-long learning. Access to books and reading materials is the most significant barrier to literacy. In areas of poverty, the ratio of books to children is 1 book for every 300 children, a figure contributing to the reading gap between low and middle income families. By 12th grade, the reading proficiency of students from low income families is 4 years behind middle income students. Studies prove book choice and ownership are fundamental in promoting literacy. Children who are free to choose what to read are more likely to read, and the number of books in a home has the same impact on a child’s level of educational attainment as parental education levels. In 2001, Adrienne Schatz founded Book Trust to help students gain access to books and develop a love for reading. She started with a small pilot program of 170 students in Larimer County, Colorado, providing students money to select and purchase their own books. Today, Book Trust serves over 36,000 kids in 15 states and operates in over 120 schools with high populations of low income students as measured by the National School Lunch Program. Book Trust gives each child $7 a month to choose and order books of their very own from the Scholastic Reading Club. In addition to providing children with books, Book Trust offers resources and support to teachers and families, helping to cultivate a love of reading and learning in the classroom and in the home. Book Trust classrooms see significant increases in the number of students reading at grade level, and teachers report Book Trust has a dramatic positive effect on their students’ families, providing a means for parents to learn about and support their child’s interest and education.
