Avenida’s community-based efforts began with the renovation of the historic Guadalupe Theatre, now under the management of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, an anchor of the neighborhood. Avenida then constructed Plaza Guadalupe located in the 1300 block of Guadalupe Street. This location was transformed from a dilapidated area into a beautiful community park where children can play and families and neighbors can gather. The next economic development project for Avenida was the El Parian Business Incubator, a facility built to provide low-cost office space and stimulate commerce and activity in the area. They then tackled the renovation of El Progreso Community Center, which today serves as a meeting and rental space for private parties, quinceañeras and birthday celebrations. Avenida has devoted more than 30 years to beautifying the neighborhood and restoring the community’s vibrancy and vitality. Careful attention has been given to preserving the historic character of the neighborhood while encouraging growth. The ultimate goal of each endeavor is to enhance the Avenida neighborhood’s ability to resume its traditional role in San Antonio.

Education: Our goal is to build the educational capacity of children through our Learning Centers and the Prospect Hill 100 Scholarship Fund. The American Sunrise Learning Center (ASLC) currently serves thirty-nine 1st – 5th graders. The expansion of two new centers will afford us the opportunity to serve 6th – 12th graders. American Sunrise wants to track students from when they start elementary school to when they graduate from high school, assist them in their efforts to go to college, and provide them with a college scholarship. Adult Services: We work to build the financial capacity of adults through financial literacy classes, enhance the employability of the children’s parents through English as a Second Language (ESL) and citizenship classes. American Sunrise maintains a skills roster of the Learning Center parents and neighborhood businesses and matches them to subcontracting needs in each of our program areas as a means to help them build their financial capacity. Housing: The dream of home ownership is becoming a reality for many of our parents who are primarily first time home buyers. Our housing program buys older, run down houses, and turns them into beautifully rehabilitated homes that sell at affordable prices. We recognize that there are many elderly living in this area who are on fixed incomes and unable to do routine home maintenance to their homes. For this very special group we provide emergency and long overdue home rehabilitation funds. Economic Revitalization: Most of the businesses in the one square mile are located in two major thoroughfares and our goal is to revitalize those economic corridors into thriving economic generators that will help strengthen and anchor our neighborhood. Our goal is to help them improve or expand their businesses and attract new businesses into the Westside of San Antonio. Community Service: This May, we established Public Allies, an AmeriCorps project that will place 30 young adults between the age of 18 and 30 in apprenticeship positions at non-profit organizations throughout the city of San Antonio. Each participating Ally will be awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship at the end of their 10-month apprenticeship. Through this effort, American Sunrise is helping to build a new cadre of leaders in our non-profit sector, which serves children and families throughout San Antonio and Bexar County.
