The Center was created in 1990 as the nation’s first and largest Veteran-specific homeless shelter. It began as a 100-bed, emergency facility in a surplus VA office building, and by 1991 was recognized as the 142nd “Point of Light” by President George H.W. Bush during his administration. Since that time, the NECHV has continued to improve its specialized model for Veterans. The Center has developed a comprehensive residential treatment program (serving over 300 veterans at any given time) comprised of the emergency housing and transitional housing program, including specialized housing for female homeless Veterans in the NECHV Women’s Dormitory Program. NECHV also provides extensive services in substance abuse counseling, post detox, mental health, case management, accessing the Veterans Administration system, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), pre-employment training, post-incarceration re-integration, job placement, housing placement, dental and medical treatment, and daily hot meals.

People Making a Difference (PMD) organizes one-time, hands-on volunteer projects for individuals to help with; partners with businesses to promote effective community involvement; and trains and assists nonprofit leaders in strengthening volunteer management. By offering flexible project-by-project registration, PMD engages a variety of volunteers seeking opportunities for interesting, needed work, meeting other philanthropic people, and learning how local charities are solving complex problems. PMD organizes service projects assisting primarily small, community-based charities, the majority of which do not have adequate staffing and other resources dedicated to working with volunteers and so need assistance in order to involve volunteers effectively. PMD partners with businesses of all sizes to identify clear community service goals and objectives (like team building and morale development) and then to develop appropriate employee volunteer opportunities for groups of 6 to 100.

Working off forty years of being personally engaged in grassroots church planting in Boston and Cambridge across a wide demographic spectrum, Rev. Ralph Kee does what he can to further enable church planters to understand and successfully carry out the apostolic task of church planting. Gathering church planters together frequently to learn from one another, learning from each other how to do it by doing it themselves, is one means the GBCPC uses. Ralph regularly encourages church planters and those contemplating a church-planting calling through one-on-one conversations over coffee. He tries to keep in touch with new church plants as they emerge in Greater Boston, and also tries to keep up on church planting needs and opportunities. Rev. Kee teaches a course on “Critical Thinking for Effective Ministry” at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary’s Boston campus, the Center for Urban Ministerial Education (CUME).
