We involve students in undergraduate research projects that have been published in papers in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at local, regional, and national meetings. Six full-time faculty members with teaching and science awards, along with eight laboratory instructors contribute to the education of our undergraduates during and outside of class hours. We have excellent teaching and research facilities, and modern instrumentation which are accessible to our students to gain hands-on experience. Drake chemistry graduates have pursued doctoral degrees at University of Notre Dame, University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Arizona State University.
We believe that learning is an interactive process. Children are best served by an environment that allows active exploration of materials and people relevant to the child’s own life experiences. The director, in conjunction with staff, teachers, and aides, will plan and execute a curriculum based on freedom of choice, balanced with specific learning activities with the goals of stimulating curiosity, enhancing learning, promoting independent thinking and a positive self-concept. The corporation operates as a non-profit parent cooperative. The Board of Directors is made up of the parent members who serve in a supervisory and advisory capacity to the staff, and determine policy and procedure for the cooperative. All parents will be encouraged to actively participate in all aspects of the program. We believe that parent participation develops a partnership between home and school that fosters a greater consistency and stability for children. Parental involvement creates an environment that is an extension of the home, rather than a substitute for it.

The Governor’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) Advisory Council leads the Governor’s state STEM initiative. This Council, co-chaired by Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds and Vermeer Corporation President and CEO Mary Andringa, was created by Iowa Governor Terry Branstad’s to increase student interest and achievement in STEM and to promote economic development in the state. One of Council’s initial action items is to increase student interest in STEM through the implementation of scale-up projects. In the spring of 2012, in a competitive process, Drake University was selected as the South Central Iowa STEM Hub. As a hub, Drake’s responsibility will be to fund the implementation of scale-up programs, develop an action plan for the South Central region, conduct a needs analysis and strength analysis in the South Central Region and evaluate the implementation of the scale-up programs. The Regional Manager, Advisory Board, and staff will also identify, grow, and create STEM programs at the university and in the surrounding area.

What is Project Based Learning? Project Based Learning is the in-depth investigation or research of real world topics (trees, pets, wheels). It includes highly motivated activities and experiences that allow for a student to be active participant in his/her own learning. Why are we doing Project Based Learning? Both themes and units have an important place in early childhood curriculum. However, they are not substitutes for projects, in which children ask questions that guide the investigation and make decisions about the activities to be undertaken. Unlike themes units, the topic of a project is a real phenomenon that children can investigate directly, rather than mainly through library research. Project topics draw children’s attention to questions such as: How do things work? What do people do? What tools do people use? Possible Project Topics for the Year * Families * Trees * Pumpkins * Robots * Water * Snow * Gardens * Pets * Buildings * Pizza * Lunch * Wheels How can parents and families get involved? • Share knowledge of the topics (Gardner comes in and demonstrates gardening, Chef or Home Cook demonstrate cooking, Author shares the writing process) • Bring in materials related to themes (family photos, rake, old cookie pan etc.) • Volunteer time in the classroom or on field trips. © 2012 Grace United Methodist Church Preschool 515-279-5942 Contact Us
