Small World Speech uses the Compton Pronouncing English as a Second Language Program (Compton P-ESL Program): an accent modification program to improve professional and social speaking skills. Clear, effective, and confident communication can be achieved with our training. The program modifies accented speech to improve pronunciation, but does not eliminate the accent or interfere with your native language or culture.
The goal at Small World Speech is to help our clients improve their spoken English. Our program is designed to teach our clients ways in which areas of their speech is important to change and the ways in which they can make these changes. The ultimate goal is to replace existing speech habits with new habit patterns which are used unconsciously and automatically in one’s everyday speech. To help accomplish this objective, our program follows three general stages of learning. In the first stage, clients will learn to hear or discriminate the particular sounds of English which are difficult for them. This is prerequisite, since it is nearly impossible to learn to pronounce sounds correctly if one is unable to perceive them accurately. In the second stage, clients will learn to produce troublesome sounds in single words and sentences and practice hearing and reproducing the rhythms, phrasing, and intonations of American English. Most people can accomplish these first two stages within a relatively short time and are able to use their new pronunciations, when they are consciously trying to do so. The final stage is the transfer stage which involves habituating one’s newly acquired pronunciations into everyday conversation. This is the most critical stage and requires breaking down one’s native language speaking habits of English by extending one’s practice into natural and real speaking situations.
