To benefit the University, the Center for Sport Performance (CSP) conducts work to further knowledge of sport and also foster a close collaboration between faculty, students and the community. This work enhances scholarly and creative activity while providing both undergraduate and graduate students with experiences outside the traditional classroom environment. The CSP maintains the preeminence of learning so integral to CSUF while providing a high quality program to meet the evolving needs of our diverse student body. It also expands connections and partnerships with our region by engaging the community in a symbiotic relationship allowing us to teach students who will ultimately serve the community at large.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is the oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society in the country. Its members include Hillary Rodham Clinton, Jimmy Carter and John Grisham. Membership is by-invitation only and requires students to be in the top 7.5% of their junior class and top 10% of their senior class or graduate program. The Fullerton Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi has been on our campus for 43 years and currently includes 510 active members. Every year, approximately 150 students are initiated into the chapter. The Student California Teachers Association, or SCTA for short, is an organization geared towards helping future educators while their still in college. SCTA is a network, support center, and a mentoring group. This organization essentially offers the tools necessary to foster interest in the education profession providing, pre-professionals information about their rights, responsibilities and vital support systems. SCTA devotes many hours to putting on educational and informative workshops and events to help future educators at Cal State Fullerton become the best educators possible. SCTA is on over 100 college campuses and is a child of the statewide organization CTA (California Teachers Association). SCTA members are also a part of NEA's (National Education Association) student programs and receive all the benefits that CTA and NEA members receive at a student price. The annual price of $30 is reimbursed to you for every year you were a part of SCTA, as soon as you become a CTA member when becoming a teacher.

The SMRT program provides undergraduate and graduate students in the CSUF College of Natural Sciences and Math with an international research experience in a tropical ecosystem. Students travel to Chiang Mai, in Northern Thailand, to participate for six weeks in on-going research projects in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, physics, math and geology at Chiang Mai University and the surrounding area. Students actively collaborate with Thai faculty and students in laboratory and field-based studies appropriate to the particular project.

The Center for Internships & Community Engagement (CICE) creates cooperative linkages between higher education, community organizations and professional offices and strives to create high quality, community-based experiences that benefit students, partner sites, and communities. We are committed to fulfilling the mission of the University to create "...experiences in and out of the classroom, [so that] students develop the habit of intellectual inquiry, prepare for challenging professions, strengthen relationships to their communities and contribute productively to society." Community engagement through academic internships and service-learning is a high impact practice that prepares students for participation in a global society, broadens their educational experiences, facilitates lifelong habits of intellectual inquiry, and prepares them for successful careers. CICE develops reciprocal partnerships with community organizations, public agencies, and industry that offer opportunities for students to learn through service and/or work experiences relevant to their studies. We facilitate and support the work of faculty in engaged teaching, learning and scholarship. We support the University through coordination of community engagement resources and procedures. Our partners include corporations, non-profits, start-up firms, municipal agencies, and small boutique firms. Internships are available in most majors and for both domestic and international students.

CCS aims to reduce childhood obesity among immigrant Hispanic children by 1) developing a novel curricula on childhood obesity and nutrition, emphasizing health policy and social contextual determinants (culture and the environment) of obesity in the Hispanic population 2) training and developing underrepresented Hispanic leaders to more effectively tackle childhood obesity and enter the workforce through not only class-room learning, but also through community-based and USDA-related experiential experience. Welcome to the Plants & H2O lab Research in our lab at Cal State Fullerton addresses many aspects of the interactions between plants and water and ranges in scope from plant physiology to the role of plants in the global water cycle. The current focus is on plant hydraulics – the structure and function of plant hydraulic systems – and specifically on how plants deal with air bubbles (embolisms) that can form in their water-conducting systems during drought stress or frost. Two aspects of embolism formation that are currently very active areas of research in our lab are mechanisms of embolism repair and the degree and nature of connectivity and redundancy in water-conducting systems, which can affect the movement of air and water within a plant and thereby affect embolism formation and repair. Other recent research has addressed the depths of plant root systems and their relationship to water availability, especially at the global scale, and competition for water between plants. Much of the current research in our lab is based on a comparative approach and is centered on shrubs, because they occur from the driest to the wettest environments. Our field research is conducted at sites ranging from deserts, coastal sage scrub, and chaparral to savannas and forests in North and South America. The comparative research is done in close collaboration with plant anatomists, which allows us to explore both the function and structure of plant hydraulic systems. Our research has implication for water conservation and irrigation needs of woody plants used for landscaping and as woody fruit and nut crops, and applied research in these areas is providing new directions for our lab.
