Academic Vision Through outstanding academic programs in architecture, art and engineering, and a Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art prepares talented students to make enlightened contributions to society. From the start, Cooper Union was a unique institution, dedicated to founder Peter Cooper's proposition that education is the key not only to personal prosperity but to civic virtue and harmony. Cooper wanted his graduates to acquire the technical mastery and entrepreneurial skills that lead to prosperity while, at the same time, enriching their intellects and sparking their creativity. And he had a third purpose as well: To instill a sense of social justice that would translate into action. In 1859, such a broad pedagogical goal was visionary; today, it is the standard by which excellence in higher education is measured. FOUNDATION BUILDING The Cooper Union’s Foundation Building is a national and city landmark. Its Great Hall has served as a public forum since 1859, when 3,500 people could stand to hear free lectures by the speakers whose views were reshaping society. This exceptional venue served as a platform for Abraham Lincoln’s “Right Makes Might” and the birth of the NAACP and the women's suffrage movement. As a presidential candidate and then returning two years later as President, Barack Obama spoke on financial reform and economic regulation. Today, The Great Hall continues as a forum for civic discourse, cultural events, performances and community activities. 41COOPER SQUARE The Cooper Union’ s new building at 41 Cooper Square—a technologically advanced academic facility—is located on the east side of Third Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets. Awarded LEED Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), 41 Cooper Square houses the college’s Albert Nerken School of Engineering and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences along with additional facilities for the School of Art and the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture. Designed by 2005 Pritzker Prize-winning architect Thom Mayne of Morphosis, the nine-story, 175,000 square foot, full-block building replaces more than 40 percent of the academic space at the college with reconfigurable, state-of-the-art classrooms, laboratories, studios and public spaces. Built with stringent sustainability goals, 41 Cooper Square is the first LEED Platinum certified academic building in New York City. The New York University Tisch School of the Arts is a center of study in the performing and media arts. Founded on August 17, 1965, Tisch is a training ground for artists, scholars of the arts, filmmakers, and creative entrepreneurs. The school merges the technical training of a professional school with the academic resources of a major research university to immerse students in their intended artistic disciplines. It is located at 721 Broadway in Manhattan, New York City. NYU has the most alumni working at Broadway theatre.HistoryTisch School of the Arts was founded in order to provide conservatory training in theatre and film, in the context of a research university. The school created additional departments such as dance, theatre design, and cinema studies within a few years. Following the creation of the undergraduate Department of Drama in 1974, the school expanded into other artistic forms, including the Interactive Telecommunications Program, Department of Dramatic Writing, Department of Performance Studies, Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, Department of Photography and Imaging, and The Department of Art and Public Policy.In 1985, the school's first dean, David Oppenheim solicited a donation from Laurence A. and Preston Robert Tisch that made possible the acquisition and renovation of 721 Broadway, where most of the school’s programs are housed. In recognition of the generosity of the Tisch family, the school was renamed Tisch School of the Arts.
Since 1969, IAR in NYC has taught audio recording, audio engineering, and post production. Our grads pursue careers in music recording, production, live sound, radio/TV/film, and more. Our teachers are active in the world music scene, keeping our program relevant and stimulating. IAR fosters individual growth within a committed, supportive community. Trained specialists are with you in each class, grads can return for complimentary re-training, and placement extends beyond graduation. The Art Moderne styled Art Theatre first opened at 36 east 8th Street in 1930, starting out as a late-run showcase for American and foreign movies, but became a first-run theater in the late 1950’s. The Art Theatre was later became the Movieland. In the mid-90s architects Davis Brody Bond was hired to renovate the building for use by NYU and added the facade.

The Latin American and Caribbean Laboratory (Latin Lab) serves as an intellectual platform for research, educational, and service initiatives related to architecture, urban design, and urban planning in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Based at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), the Lab aims to become a leading laboratory for the study of the built environment and community development in LAC and its diasporas and a premier resource to assist in their just and sustainable transformations. The Tobin College of Business faculty carries out this responsibility through excellence in teaching and a commitment to applied business research.
We are an academic community committed to educating students with adult responsibilities. We service the educational needs of students ages 17-21 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:35 p.m. Monday through Friday. Our unique hours provide students who work or raise families the opportunity to create an academic schedule that dovetails with their adult responsibilities. We have an open admissions policy and enroll students who have been discharged from other schools due to age and older foreign-born students with limited English proficiency. Our goal is to graduate students who are prepared for college or who are equipped with improved literacy and communication skills that enable them to find better employment or enhance their status in the workplace. In order to ensure that students receive the appropriate services they need to succeed, we engage in constant monitoring of attendance and academic performance, and in providing appropriate academic intervention and support services. Intervention may take the form of counseling, parent-teacher-student conferences, supplementary instruction, supervised study programs, group and individual tutorials, and the provision of social welfare supports such as medical, housing, legal, and employment assistance. Beginning in 1989 with only 25 students we serve over 800 a year today. Approximately two-thirds are older, foreign-born ELL students representing over 50 countries from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Our non-ELL students have typically dropped out from other schools or needed to leave those schools for a variety of reasons. Many of them have dropped out from more than one high school prior to their admission to our school. By the time they reach Manhattan Comprehensive, approximately 60% are legally and financially independent of their families. Approximately 70% work during the day to support themselves; approximately a third are raising children of their own.
We teach The Lee Strasberg Method Acting technique at a level commensurate with our acting student’s experience. The comprehensive curriculum includes Acting classes, Singing classes, Dance classes, Acting for Film and TV classes, Musical Theatre classes, and Performance classes for children and teens interested in learning and improving their acting and performing knowledge and skill.

Herb Lubalin (1918–1981) is best known for his wildly illustrative typography and his groundbreaking work for the magazines Avant Garde, Eros, and Fact. The Study Center's core collection includes an extensive archive of his work, including promotional, editorial and advertising design, typeface designs, posters, logos, and other other materials dating from 1950 to 1980. The collection also includes work by other eminent designers including Otl Aicher, Ruedi Baur, Anthon Beeke, Lucian Bernhard, Lester Beall, Will Burtin, Lou Dorfsman, Karl Gerstner, Tibor Kalman, Alvin Lustig, Push Pin Studios, Paul Rand, Bradbury Thompson, Massimo Vignelli, and many more. There is also a library of books and magazines about design and typography, an extensive collection of posters, myriad type specimen books and pamphlets.
