Nectar's Reviews

188 Main St
Burlington, VT 05401

(802) 658-4771

A long-standing landmark on Main Street in Burlington, Nectar’s restaurant and bar has been the headquarters for thousands of local, regional and national music acts. From Phish to Grace Potter, from reggae to rock, Nectar’s Bar and Lounge is THE place to see live music in downtown Burlington. The building itself has a long history of entertaining. Originally a savings and loan, the building was purchased to create a two-story restaurant/lounge called the Hi-Hat. The chandelier that hangs over the main room today is a relic of the grand Hi-Hat. In 1975, Nector Rorris bought the building to create the infamous Nectar’s. The stage became legendary when a group of then-unknown local musicians known as Phish began to play regularly, sowing the seeds of their enormous following. Since then, the room has become Burlington’s preeminent live music lounge, and the home of what have got to be the world’s best gravy fries. In 2003 Nector sold the business to the present owners and in April of 2012 the present owners purchased the entire building making sure the future of this landmark live music institution has a long successful future! Mission Statement: We are so committed to our mission statement that we printed it on the back of our staff shirts for all the world to see! FRESH MUSIC SERVED DAILY!

Using a mixture of both Irish and local craftsman, Rí Rá managed to respectfully retain the building's detailed, marble facade, blending the old with the new. The pub captures a number of distinctive styles, each designed to celebrate a different aspect of the traditional pub experience. Bethesda OutsideThe "Victorian Shop & Pub" contains some salvage that is over 120 years old and displays bric-a-brac that represents Irish music, sports and literature. A relaxed haven for diners can be found in "The Cottage" area, which features a working stone fireplace. The "Snugs" provide an intimate setting for the art of conversation, for which the Irish are renowned. Originally opened in March 1999, the pub was extended in 2002 to add "The Library" area which is dedicated to Ireland's rich literary heritage. The Library can be booked as a private party room and can accommodate groups of up to 22 seated for plated dinners, or 35 for a cocktail style party. We celebrate the connection of Burlington and Lake Champlain to the sea by providing the finest quality regional seafood. While giving a nod to the French heritage of the lake’s namesake we draw influence from the St. Lawrence region well as the New England coast and the Canadian Maritimes. We work with small purveyors and fishermen to ensure the fish are caught or raised with the most sustainable practices possible. In true Vermont style we also work closely with area farmers and food producers to get the highest quality meat, produce, cheese, and baked goods.

My latest series of paintings takes inspiration from the written and printed word, using language in the unfettered spirit of graffiti, tagging and street art. Reading never came easily to me as a young girl—words were not my friends. But today, the words in my paintings are a source of new ideas and strength. The words I choose for each painting help define who I am in relation to nature and culture, and advance my lifelong process of becoming an artist, teacher and communicator. I rarely know in advance the form that my work will take. In some important ways, that simply isn’t up to me. Like nature itself, art is unforceable. Poet Mary Oliver in a 1986 poem simply called “Poem,” calls the spirit “an airy and shapeless thing” driven to embody itself, to clothe itself in the tangibles of the body and the physical world. The spirit, she writes, ...enters us -- in the morning shines from brute comfort like a stitch of lightning; and at night lights up the deep and wondrous drownings of the body like a star.

Vermont Violins and The Burlington Violin Shop
Distance: 0.3 mi Competitive Analysis
23 Church St
Burlington, VT 05401

(802) 862-0349

When Kathy Reilly was a child, she learned to play the violin on a poorly made instrument that was rife with problems. Kathy was a pretty determined student, however, and was able to overcome the limitations of her instruments, but she remembers how difficult it was and how many of her friends quit as result of poor equipment. When, in 1994, Oren and Kathy started to consider the options of becoming a violin provider, the letters from local teachers poured in: there was clearly a palpable need for quality student instruments in our small Montpelier community. What started as a hobby, open only a few hours each week, quickly turned into something far more important. Sales rose quickly and it was clear that the services this little fledgling business offered were very much needed. After only a year, Kathy quit her "day job" and dedicated herself to the shop and to teaching. Oren joined full time a few years later. By that time, the shop was open full time and people were coming to Montpelier for their violins from all over the state. While life in Montpelier was good, there was not enough players in such a small town. Vermont Violins opened in West Lebanon, New Hampshire in 2003 and then purchased the Burlington Violin Shop in 2004. With strong demographics behind them, the company was able to grow into a fully-fledged, professional violin shop with ample scale to service all ranges of players from beginner to professional. Opening the Burlington shop on Church Street in 2010 brought the violin shop into the main-stream of the Burlington community and a strong, creative addition to the retail life of Vermont's largest shopping district. The new space also afforded the ability to create our own line of instruments designed to meet the needs of our musical community: designed with input from local teachers. Come in and check out our new location, test an instrument or just watch the luthiers at work in the shop. All are welcome, we hope to see you soon!
