We started Rickshaw to satisfy our personal love of bags. We love bags, and we love how people in general love their bags. It’s wonderful, if not kind of weird, the way people grow attached to their favorite one – as though it were a pet, or loved-one. We think that’s pretty cool. We also love city living, and all the excitement, diversity and culture we experience in a thriving metropolitan environment – access to art, theater, music and restaurants – the creative energy that pulses through the community. We design for people – artists and non-artists alike – who thrive on the urban experience, and celebrate the urban creative spirit. Though our years of experience, we know a lot about designing great bags, and providing wonderful customer service. We’re here to design, manufacture and sell some great bags and we're looking forward to continually to meeting our loyal fan base, who add to our story. We simply love what we do, and we hope you do too. The Name "Rickshaw" Most people know what a rickshaw is, but few people know the word “rickshaw” originates from the Japanese word “jinrikishaw”, represented by three kanji characters (人 jin = human, 力 riki = strength, 車 sha = vehicle), which literally means “human-powered vehicle”. Legend has it the rickshaw was first invented in the 1860’s by an American missionary living in Japan, to help transport his infirmed wife. The original design featured a two-wheeled cart, seating one or two passengers, drawn by a human runner. Rickshaws quickly became very popular in Japan, and later spread to other cities throughout Asia. With the invention of the bicycle, rickshaws were outfitted with pedals, and the “bicycle rickshaw”, or “pedicab”, was born. Rickshaws in various human-powered and motorized forms are still used today in many Asian cities to transport goods and passengers – and in many cities throughout the world, they serve as novel transportation for tourists. We're a small and growing company, but our name carries a rich history. We’re fond of the eco-friendly, human-powered connotation, and love the way it mirrors our values related to environmentalism, social responsibility and economic sustainability.
