Howard University Hospital, previously known as Freedmen's Hospital, has served the black community in the District of Columbia for over 150 years, having been established in 1862 to cater for the medical needs of the thousands of African Americans who came to Washington during the Civil War, seeking their freedom. The Emergency Medicine residency program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, in collaboration with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Georgetown University School of Medicine, was established in July 2006 and is a three-year training program emphasizing pediatrics, critical care, and trauma management. The program's vision is to produce exceptional, compassionate emergency physicians/clinicians capable of responding to urgent needs for medical care with speed, skill, efficiency, and confidence. Our goal is to train the next generation of leaders in academic and community emergency medicine.

Our objective is to launch a pilot project which focuses on three areas: 1) Agricultural, for the advancement of agro-based technology and or mechanized farming for self-sufficiency from productive efforts from small or large scale business farmers; 2) Educational, in the form of grants for scholarships to students to pursue further studies at Njala University and or other preferred institutions of their choice to study Business or Agriculture. “Only through education will the continent (Africa) and its sons and daughters be able to meet the demands and challenges of the 21st Century” 3) Health. This project is to incorporate the request for Mobile Units to help alleviate the needed medical facilities among the Chiefdoms in Moyamba District. Pilot Project #1 - Agricultural technology. The projects concentrates on mechanized farming in the Moyamba District. The need for mechanization is as a result of the global population increase which must be fed. It improves the production efficiency by reducing cost per unit of product, encourages large scale production and improves the quality of farm produce. This is the answer for subsistence living. Agricultural technology, once advanced, will create the process of using agricultural machinery to massively increase farm output. Small scale enterprise development in agriculture can help marginalized persons and groups to trade their way out of abject poverty. That is why we offer financial services to the poorest of the poor in our operational areas. Youth development is among the top strategies to avoid the marginalization and social exclusion of youths. It portray one of the chief factors that contribute to violence of the recent civil war. It is an overriding factor for the widespread sense of economic disempowerment, which stems from massive unemployment of the youths in the Moyamba District. The District must take steps to stimulate economic activity to create employment for the youths by instituting mechanisms for Government and Private Partnership. Youth underemployment and structural unemployment is a key priority. Farmers from the Motonkoh village in Ribbi chiefdom, Moyamba district, prepares to harvest rice from its community farm. The surrounding villages work together on all aspects of the farm. In the industrial sector, conditions are not much of a difference. Materials may be useful for scrap metal, but even this may be hard to extract because the feeder roads are not motorable for transportation. The roads are not motorable. The surface drainage are in poor condition and not conducive for pedestrians in the wet season. The plantations are used for selling palm fruit to natives to make products like palm oil. An agricultural engineering company operates from the edge of Freetown at a smaller scale. This firm designs, manufactures and supplies a range of agro-based processing equipment from farmers. The processing of by-products from cassava, commonly known as gari, is processed and transported by tricycle carriers. The major objective is the need to integrate the university and research sectors into innovative systems as an integral part of all interventions. The opportunities for technological development will require complementary funding for facilities like feed mills (for livestock), processing plants (for gari), and improve feeder roads for market access. It is clear that support for operations such as the private sector (and other) engineering firms, could leverage significant improvements for field operations. The Institute of Agricultural Research – continues to promote research studies for the following crops: cassava, sweet potato, maize, cowpea, yam, groundnut and soybean. The focus includes, the research for crop improvement, nutrition, natural resource management, and socio-economics activities. Pilot Project #2 - Education. A joint research project by international experts from the University of Udine, Italy, collaborated with Njala University for the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Science and Technology program. The project is for development and technology, aimed at specifically improving the health of people that cook traditionally in developing countries, and also help in environmental protection from global warning. They also held a seminar at Njala University at the Mokonde Campus in the Moyamba District. Accordingly, Njala University is noted as the agricultural university in Moyamba district. It has very limited laboratory facilities. Although things are now beginning to improve, students conduct practical work mainly in the field.

The Capitol City Pharmacy Medical Reserve Corps (CCPMRC) is a group of local pharmacy volunteers in Washington, DC, focused on improving the health and safety of their community. We are the first nationally-recognized pharmacy-specialized MRC. CCPMRC is a collaboration between the Howard University College of Pharmacy and the DC Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Administration. This MRC has been uniquely established in October 2013 to recruit and train volunteers to provide pharmacy-related functions during an emergency situation, and has been established as the first nationally-recognized pharmacy-specialized since 2015. Pharmacy related functions include but are not limited to mass vaccinations, staffing medical point-of-dispensing stations and provision of emergency supply of chronic medications.
