While Steps on Broadway is the studio of choice for many of today's brightest stars, The School at Steps cultivates young dancers, ages 18 mos. – 18 yrs., from their first step in a dance studio through their pre-professional training. Students discover their individual artistic voices in a creative environment with the guidance of an internationally recognized faculty. The personal attention the school provides encourages students to mature as dancers, grow as individuals, and enrich their passion for the art form. School at Steps graduates go on to dance with professional companies, study at top college dance programs, and perform on Broadway. The School at Steps offers an Academic Year (September - June) and Summer Program (July & August) designed for students interested in exploring various dance styles as well as for those students already focused on a particular discipline. A variety of classes and levels are offered throughout the year in ballet, modern, tap, jazz, theater dance, pilates and hip hop. In addition to classes, students at the school are given performance opportunities as well as educational workshops on dance and career related topics. Beginning with the Young Dancers program and continuing through the most advanced Pre-Professional classes, The School at Steps provides children an opportunity to explore the world of dance, experiment and learn technique, and enrich their appreciation for the various forms of the art. Verdi Square Festival of the Arts

Broadway at W 72nd St
New York, NY 10023

The Verdi Square Festival, an annual series of free outdoor concerts by outstanding young talents, has been bringing great music back to New York’s historic Verdi Square (Broadway & 72nd Street) since 2006. Conceived of and managed by Upper West music lovers in partnership with the New York City Deptartment of Parks and Recreation, the Festival traditionally opens its season with an Opera program. Concerts also have included Jazz, American Musical Theater, Klezmer, and Bluegrass. Originally the Festival presented artists only from New York Conservatories. They now are joined by students from Boston’s New England Conservatory who regularly journey to New York to appear in one of the city’s most unique venues. Young artists appreciate the chance to hone performing skills before highly receptive audiences. Conservatories enthusiastically present artists for participation. The Festival has received recognition from the media (see Press Page) and Mayors of both New York and Parma, Verdi’s birthplace. The modest annual budget of the Festival covers artists’ fees and expenses, sound equipment, insurance, videography, printing, and website maintenance. The Deptartment of Parks & Recreation provides concert seating, stage, and manpower. There are no administrative overheads. The Festival is entirely volunteer-staffed. Supported by tax-deductible contributions made through the City Parks Foundation, the Festival now also offers special corporate sponsorship opportunities. Nestled in the heart of the Upper West Side is West End Day School, an elementary school dedicated to the belief that children who have mild to moderate learning, language, and/or emotional issues can succeed and build vital academic and social foundations. West End Day School is a small, nurturing, specialized school for children who may not be well served by the conventional system. We offer a social and emotional perspective to learning while maintaining a challenging mainstream curriculum. Our teachers work hand-in-hand with social workers and other specialists to respond as a team to all aspects of a child's development. Children flourish here. Our school is a place where our youngsters can form successful bonds that perhaps did not develop in other school settings. Every day, they are given the tools and techniques they need to feel safe, to succeed, and to feel a sense of achievement. And they have fun learning and forming positive relationships, often for the first time.

Tap dancing is a wonderful way to introduce children to the world of DANCE THEATER. Children respond to the energetic physicality of tap while developing dance and rhythm skills, performance ability, and a CONFIDENCE in their own bodies. For younger children, technique is learned in a creative child centered manner through the use of singing, games, props, and dramatic play. PROFESSIONAL TRAINING, strong technique, rhythm, musicality, and the JOY OF PERFORMANCE become the focus for older kids and teens.
