Much has been written about horsemanship, deeming it"'natural", " whispering", "authentic","reasoning" and "partnership" etc. There is a profound depth to horsemanship that keeps us horsemen and women always reaching. Just when you think you have found that perfect training technique or method, someone else comes up with yet another way of getting the same response. Isn't that what it is all about? Being able to take a little of this and a little of that to the training pen and finding your success using what works for you and your horse? There is no cookie cutter horse training method that works for all horses let alone all horsemen. Horses have an instinct deep within that is eons old. We know they are a prey animals and that they perceive us humans as predators and dangerous, which make them naturally wary of us. But the level of wariness differs in each individual horse, making some very willing students and others more challenging and resistant. Ramon offers another point of view to his clinic participants whether it is colt starting or working with horse and/or rider issues. He thoroughly believes that the trainer is the thinker and decision maker, not the horse. Yet you will NOT see domination type methods. He believes also that while the horse may make mistakes we must be accepting of that possibility because we too will make mistakes that the horse will not understand. Ramon takes the time to explain the stuff we cant 'see' happening. You know, the psychological stuff. What happens in the horse's brain that led to the physical response we can all see in the round pen or under saddle? This ability to truly know the horse is what sets trainers apart. This moment of rest the horse enjoys while Ramon has this discussion with the audiences seems spontaneous, but it is an intentional break Ramon recognizes and capitalizes on to allow the horse to process the learning experience and rest for reward. Plus, how many 'predators' walk AWAY from a prey animal and let it rest? This is trust being built right before you. You can train with much lower stress on the horse (and yourself) if you understand more of what is taking place from the horse' perspective. As a rider in a clinic Ramon works on your ability to apply a cue your horse understands and 'cleans-up' the cues you may be confusing your horse with. And of course, a horse's body moves naturally and efficiently in his gaits and lateral directions and you will learn to work WITH them and not against them. Those of you who have gentler colts and horses, you will be able to progress at a faster pace than say a person who brings more resistant horses. But either way, when you attend a clinic by Ramon you will ride away with more clarity and more skills to be more successful with your horses.
