Pittsburg State University, also called Pitt State or PSU, is a public university with approximately 7,479 students (6,000 undergraduates and 1,400 graduate students) located in Pittsburg, Kansas, United States. A large percentage of the student population consists of residents within the Pittsburg region; the gender proportion is relatively equal. Almost 89% of the students are Americans. Pitt State also has a 19:1 student-to-faculty ratio. It is a member of the Kansas Board of Regents. Currently, it has an endowment of around $74,000,000. The student newspaper of Pittsburg State University is the Collegio.HistoryPittsburg State University was founded in 1903 as the Auxiliary Manual Training Normal School, originally a branch of the State Normal School of Emporia . In 1913, it became a full-fledged four-year institution as Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg, or Pittsburg State for short. Over the next four decades, its mission was broadened beyond teacher training. To reflect this, in 1959 its name was changed again to Kansas State College of Pittsburg. The Department of Nursing was established in 1970, with the first class of 35 students admitted to the clinical program in the Fall of 1971. The first baccalaureate graduates completed the program in May, 1973. Initial accreditation by the National League of Nursing was granted in 1975. The RN Completion program was begun in 1974. The Master's program in Family Nursing accepted its first students in 1993. The Chair of the Irene Ransom Bradley of Nursing is Dr. Mary Carol Pomatto, EdD, APRN-CNS (BSN 1974)

The Family & Consumer Sciences Department is one of the two original programs started on campus back in 1903. Our new building (2003), represents the latest in features for the 21st century in the fields of Early Childhood, Interior Design, Fashion Merchandising, Individual and Family Management and FCS Teacher Education. The Family and Consumer Sciences professional association is the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS.org).
The Department of Art at Pittsburg State University, a future accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, seeks to further an educational and creative environment of the highest integrity providing students a strong foundation in creative critical thinking and design, that prepares them for professional careers in studio, applied arts and art education as well as advancing artistic disciplines and crossing traditional boundaries between academic disciplines as new professions and developments emerge.

Sororities at Pitt State utilize a formal recruitment process that takes place the week before classes begin each fall. During this time, women interested in joining sororities have the option of moving into their residence halls early and they also get a chance to visit each sorority house and meet members from each chapter. Sorority recruitment is open all PSU women who are enrolled in at least 12 credit hours You must register online to participate in sorority recruitment. There is a fee to participate in recruitment which includes meals and activities. An additional fee is required to move in to a residence hall/dorm early.
The autism certificate program is a 15-18 hour non-degree program designed to certify that participants have specialized knowledge and skills in working with children with autism.
