Edit Because literacy, functional English skills, and high school credentials are essential in our society, First Literacy provides support to Adult Basic Education programs and scholarships to adult learners. Our innovative Literacy Lab grants, professional development workshops for educators, and scholarships for adult learners help adults get the education they need to improve their lives, their communities, and their families' futures.
A central focus of Teen Challenge is the voluntary, long term (15 month) residential recovery program that provides the context for a transformational experience during which the students find freedom from their addictions. While they are enrolled in the recovery program, they earn General Equivalency Diplomas (if they are not high school graduates); have service opportunities learning job and life skills that will help them become productive citizens: serve their communities through their lives and are surrounded by a nurturing environment that fosters caring relationships.
People choosing to live a sober lifestyle often find it necessary to make changes to many aspects of their lives, including their socials circles, in order to maintain sobriety. Abrupt changes in lifestyle can lead to loss of support networks, and often cause people to become isolated. Sober people need to make new friends and discover new hobbies and interests, which can be difficult without the aid social lubricant of drugs or alcohol. Recognizing this challenge, PM makes every effort to remove barriers to getting involved with our sober community. We host daily, free events where the only requirement is to be sober. We are very welcoming to new members and encourage our regular members to get to know the new folks. In addition to offering our events at no charge, we also provide all necessary gear (the equipment required for the disciplines we teach is often very expensive and can deter people from taking up various sports, so PM removes these financial barriers to participation). Though we do not charge for membership, we do ask members to sign a Team Member Agreement. Some of the topics covered in this document include: a 48 hour sobriety policy, no tobacco use at PM events, appropriate behavior among team members, appropriate speech, public records checks, etc.
Camp Harbor View changes lives. We help underserved youth in Boston envision new pathways to success by providing life shaping experiences at a critical time in their lives. We do this through an exceptional summer camp experience and year-long programming for campers and their families.
The No Books No Ball (NBNB) Basketball Program is committed to increasing the high school graduation rate of at risk children and others within the communities that we serve. We believe that all students are capable of academic success and we seek to use basketball as a means to achieve that end. By linking athletic prowess with academic eligibility we want to encourage our student athletes to graduate from high school. Our longer term objective is to encourage our student athletes to attend college. Basketball aptitude can often translate into athletic scholarships. We encourage our student athletes to leverage their basketball skills to get these scholarships to help defray the cost of today’s college education. Through NBNB, students learn the importance of team work, school work, discipline, perseverance, goal setting and other positive reinforcements. We strive to teach the Five Characteristics of Good Democratic Behavior: Cooperate Be Creative Keep an Open Mind Accept Responsibility Have Concern for Others
