If you know of someone with both deafness and blindness…….PLEASE tell them about SASISTL. Also, YOU can make a big difference in someone’s life when you volunteer to help at SASISTL meetings and events. Nationally the Deaf-Blind community calls these volunteers SSPs [Support Service Providers]. Blindness prevents many who are Deaf-Blind from getting around, simply because they can not drive and public transportation is not always available. Being able to help with transportation to a meeting is just one way an SSP can help if they wish to. Help with transportation would make it possible for many more Deaf-Blind people to attend the meetings. While at the meetings, the SSP/volunteers can help those who are hard of hearing to understand what is being said. While those that are deaf have SSP/volunteers who know sign language interpret for them. At the same time volunteers can also help describe any visual information that is helpful. Please consider volunteering and become an SSP !
