The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles is a contemporary art museum with three locations in greater Los Angeles, California. The main branch is located on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, near Walt Disney Concert Hall. MOCA's original space, initially intended as a "temporary" exhibit space while the main facility was built, is now known as the Geffen Contemporary, in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles. The Pacific Design Center facility is in West Hollywood. The museum's exhibits consist primarily of American and European contemporary art created after 1940. Since the museum's inception, MOCA's programming has been defined by its multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary art.FoundingIn a 1979 political fund raising event at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, Councilman Joel Wachs, and local philanthropist Marcia Simon Weisman happened to be seated at the same table. Throughout the evening, Weisman passionately discussed the city's need for a contemporary art museum. In the following weeks, the Mayor's Museum Advisory Committee was organized. The committee, led by William A. Norris, set about creating a museum from scratch, including locating funds, trustees, directors, curators, a gallery, and most importantly an art collection. That same year, Weisman and five other key local collectors signed an agreement whereby they would pledge chunks of their private collections, worth up to $6 million, "to create a museum of standing and repute."

(213) 625-3900

The landmark Fine Arts Building is located at 811 West 7th Street in Downtown Los Angeles, California. Also known as the Global Marine House, it was declared a historic cultural monument in 1974.ArchitectureThe building was designed by the architects Albert Raymond Walker (1881–1958) and Percy Augustus Eisen (1885–1946) in 1927. It is a compact twelve-storey block on an H-shaped plan with a facing of smooth and squared slabs of light-coloured stone.FaçadeThe first three storeys present a striking façade with a trapezoidal profile. The façade rises the entire height of the building, the side of which on the street is divided into three horizontal registers that echo the classic arrangement of a Renaissance palace in distinct lower, central and upper sections. In the Fine Arts Building as in its ancient Italian models, being closest to the eye of the beholder, the bottom section is the part on which the most sumptuous decoration and precise architectural definition is lavished. The façade's central axis is emphasized by a large entrance portal, with a rounded arch that rises the height of two storeys. This deep, splayed passageway has an arched lintel decorated with plant motifs that introduces serried ranks of arches on either side. They are resting alternately on small columns and pillars variously decorated with fantastic creatures and inlaid geometric patterns. The wall beneath the great arch is densely worked with volutes of acanthus leaves and concatenated circles simulating rope made entirely of terracotta reliefs. The entrance is divided in two by a column of green marble with a capital and decorated entablature on which the two smaller arches rest.

Invitations to show at Autonomie are offered on a rotating basis to those individuals or collectives engaged in producing critical interventions in the field of contemporary art. 2A Gallery Address: 400 S Main St #2A Contact: Calvin Phelps Email: [email protected] Website: www.2AGallery.com Phone: 213.924.3472 How is the project operated? This is an independent artist/curator ran space. How long has it been in existence? The space was founded in July of 2013. What was your motivation? To utilize a particularly unique space as a venue for creative production and exhibition. Number of organizers/responsible persons of the project. One. How are programs funded? The programs are self funded, but sales would certainly be welcomed. Who is responsible for the programming? I am, but I hope to bring together various viewpoints and voices. Number and average duration of exhibitions/events per year. I expect to have about 8 exhibitions a year with various performance or video screenings interspersed in that schedule. What kind of events are usually organized? Solo exhibits, group shows, video shows and performances. How is your programming determined? By the quality of the work. I listen to suggestions from artists and curator friends, as well as conduct as many studio visits as possible. In addition to emerging artists coming out of the various academic programs in LA, I listen to the advice of those who have defined the trajectory of contemporary art in LA. Do you accept proposals/submissions? Yes, but they must take 2A’s spatial limitations into account. What is your artistic/curatorial approach? I’m interested in interstices and how artwork can occupy those loosely defined spaces. What’s working? What’s not working? Everything seems to be off to a great start. Maybe I’ll have a different answer after there have been a few shows. What kind of role do you hope to play in your local art scene or community? I want to provide an intimate experience where people can come together and enjoy a specific work or show. I usually move opening events between 2A and my personal apartment down the hall from the space. What idea are you most excited about for the future? I have an idea to create a couple of video towers showing six individual works. The videos are short so the work can be shared by a larger number of people.

EAA represents approximately 5,000 City employees who are employed in every City department and Bureau and work at almost every one of the City’s 1,200 locations. Our members are involved in every aspect of service to the citizens of this great city. EAA hires only the most-qualified and dedicated individuals for its professional staff. This provides the maximum benefit for members and engenders respect from their counterparts at the City. EAA utilizes the same care in its selection of outside assistance, employing the finest labor legal counsel in southern California and using only union shops for its printing and consulting needs. The level of salary, benefits, and job protection currently enjoyed by City employees is a direct result of EAA's bargaining for those salaries and benefits. EAA has returned from the bargaining table with respectable wages, quality medical and retirement benefits, and excellent protection of its members' jobs. In recent years, EAA has stepped to the forefront in demanding fair treatment for all and in addressing the disparity in wages and benefits between the DWP and other City departments. In recent years, EAA has renewed its dedication to the larger labor community. EAA actively joins with its fellow unions in the Los Angeles-Long Beach Harbor Coalition, the Jewish Labor Committee, the Harry Bridges Institute, and the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. EAA members hit a high-water mark in 2006. For the first time in their history, they emphatically rejected a contract offer from City management. Their subsequent job actions garnered great respect in the labor community of southern California and produced a landmark contract agreement well in advance of the normal time frame for agreement. As a result of the members' demonstrated strength, a new era of cooperation is taking form between EAA and management through the mechanism of "mutual-gains bargaining". The cooperation was most recently demonstrated in the 2010 MOU's in which both parties recognized that sustainability for the future is beneficial to all. Additionally, all bargaining units are now covered by Fair Share (Agency Shop) provisions ensuring that the costs of representation are fairly shared by all. We are confident that the best is still to come.

The rich tapestry of Los Angeles began with a single thread: on September 4, 1781, the little band of settlers founded their new town - El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles - with a Mass and procession in honor of Our Lady of the Angels, to whom they dedicated the infant town. From time to time since then, Angelenos have sought the aid and protection of the Mother of God for what has become one of the greatest --- and yet, most challenged --- cities on the planet. In the face of the economic, social, and spiritual threats faced today not only by Los Angeles by the State, Nation, and World, the members of the Foundation of Our Lady of the Angels seek to gather all --- Catholic and non-Catholic alike --- who wish once more to entreat the aid and blessing of Our Lady of the Angels upon our Archdiocese, City and County. We look forward to doing this in three ways: 1 Sponsoring an annual Mass preceded by a Procession in honor of Our Lady of the Angels at a prominent church in the Los Angeles Archdiocese, followed by a Feast to celebrate the birthday of our Archdiocese and City in her name; 2 Maintenance of a website (www.thequeenofangels.com) dedicated to educating Catholics and non-Catholics alike about Church teaching on devotion to Our Lady and the Angels, the Kingship of Christ, and related matters; and 3 Personal devotion of the members of the Foundation and the participants in the Mass, Procession and Feast to Our Lady of the Angels, who through their prayers and good works will seek to engender reverence for the Blessed Virgin, bring the community together, and invoke the blessings of God upon the religious and civic leaders of our multicultural community and all of the inhabitants of the greater Los Angeles area, Catholic and non-Catholic alike.
