Memphis, TN 38105

The Memphis Pyramid, initially known as the Great American Pyramid, formerly referred to as the Pyramid Arena and locally referred to as The Pyramid, was originally built as a 20,142-seat arena located in downtown Memphis, in the U.S. state of Tennessee, at the banks of the Mississippi River. The facility was built in 1991 and was originally owned and operated jointly by the city of Memphis and Shelby County; Shelby County sold its share to Memphis in April 2009. Its structure plays on the city's namesake in Egypt, known for its ancient pyramids. It is (about 32 stories) tall and has base sides of ; it is by some measures the tenth-tallest pyramid in the world. The Memphis Pyramid has not been regularly used as a sports or entertainment venue since 2004. In 2015, the Pyramid re-opened as a Bass Pro Shops "megastore", which includes shopping, a hotel, restaurants, a bowling alley, and an archery range with an outdoor observation deck at its apex.ConstructionThe "Great American Pyramid" was conceived originally by Mark C. Hartz, a Memphis artist in about 1954. The project originally included three pyramids located on the south bluffs of Memphis overlooking the Mississippi River. The larger of the three would have been two-third scale of the Great Pyramid of Giza near Memphis, Egypt; the flanking structures would have been scaled at two-thirds the size of the main pyramid. The project languished for three decades until Mark's younger son, Memphian Jon Brent Hartz, resurrected the concept. Mark C. Hartz, who was well known for his architectural renderings, rendered a new bronze glass-glazed pyramid. After years of negotiations, the younger Hartz's concept was adopted by entrepreneur John Tigrett as a symbol for the city of Memphis. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 15, 1989 and the building was opened on November 9, 1991.

Beale Avenue (Beale Street)
Distance: 0.2 mi Competitive Analysis
Beale St
Memphis, TN 38103

Beale Street was created in 1841 by entrepreneur and developer Robertson Topp (1807–1876), who named it for a forgotten military hero. The original name was Beale Avenue. Its western end primarily housed shops of trade merchants, who traded goods with ships along the Mississippi River, while the eastern part developed as an affluent suburb. In the 1860s, many black traveling musicians began performing on Beale. The first of these to call Beale Street home were the Young Men's Brass Band, who were formed by Sam Thomas in 1867. In the 1870s, the population of Memphis was rocked by a series of yellow fever epidemics, leading the city to forfeit its charter in 1879. During this time Robert Church purchased land around Beale Street that would eventually lead to his becoming the first black millionaire from the south. In 1890, Beale Street underwent renovation with the addition of the Grand Opera House, later known as the Orpheum. In 1899, Robert Church paid the city to create Church Park at the corner of 4th and Beale. It became a recreational and cultural center, where blues musicians could gather. A major attraction of the park was an auditorium that could seat 2,000 people. Some of the famous speakers in the Church Park Auditorium were Woodrow Wilson, Booker T. Washington, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In the early 1900s, Beale Street was filled with clubs, restaurants and shops, many of them owned by African-Americans. In 1889, NAACP co-founder Ida B. Wells was a co-owner and editor of an anti-segregationist paper called Free Speech based on Beale. Beale Street Baptist Church, Tennessee's oldest surviving African American Church edifice built in 1864, was also important in the early civil rights movement in Memphis.

KOART is an experimental art gallery that features local artists in Memphis, Tennessee, such as alumni of the Memphis College of Art and the University of Memphis. The gallery will host shows bi monthly beginning January 31, 2014. The inaugural show will showcase the talents of 6 Memphis artists in the disciplines of painting and photography. The show that follows will be an illustration/graphic design exhibition. With this series of shows, we intend to give the artists involved a place to showcase their work and potentially make a few sales and commissions in the process. Also, there is no commission fee, so all money from sales goes directly to the artist. Our main intention is to give artists a venue to flourish, network, and progress further in their endeavors in art. The venue is located at 10 South Main, which is also the law office of K. Orrin Purdie and Lauren Parker. They are the owners of the venue and overseers of the shows in this series. Each show will have a theme based on a concept and/or discipline and will be curated by Cornell Mahan, an Alum of Memphis College of Art (BFA, Digital media '09) and local midtown Memphis artist. Purdie, Parker, and Mahan are all art enthusiasts and believe that Memphis has a lot of talented visual and performing artists that lack a place to display their skill. KOART gallery is intended to do just that.

Circuitous Succession: An Exhibition Series Curated by Jason Miller
Distance: 0.5 mi Competitive Analysis
500 S 2nd St
Memphis, TN 38103

(901) 229-1041

In July of 2013 curator Jason Miller launched the first of what would become a seventeen part exhibition series, which would consist of sixteen solo shows held at Gasoline Gallery in Memphis' Historic Broad Avenue Arts District and spanning from over four months until its finale show held on November 22, 2013. One year later Miller orchestrated a group exhibition that expanded beyond the sixteen original artists into forty-four in an exhibition titled Circuitous Succession: Epilogue, and featured fifty-seven artworks all within the Scottish Rite Cathedral of Memphis. The linking of unique artworks with the perplexing presence of historically charged spaces was a constant throughout the two year series of experimental shows in two parts of Memphis. Ultimately, thousands of visitors attended the series, with over 350 attending the opening reception of the group exhibition alone to view the artworks in juxtaposition with the four stories of the Scottish Rite. The next logical step was to make the series into an institution through the formation of an art gallery in the same spirit as the original mission that inspired the overall series. Circuitous Succession Gallery's mission is to preserve the legacy of a select few artists for years to come,
