Sense-Sational Science is a program offered by a partnership of higher education institutions, K-12 school districts, state government agencies and non-profit institutions. Sense-Sational Science is currently offered at two locations, in Tulsa, to serve eastern Oklahoma teachers, and in Lawton, to serve western Oklahoma teachers. Both of the workshops utilize community resources to focus on Oklahoma ecosystems. The activities center on the senses and address topics like animal communication, animal/human navigation and historical use of the ecosystem. Technology in the form of ipads and this website allow teachers to document their work and access resources from the many partners. Writing, in the form of notebooking, is a key element and is used throughout the program. The higher education partners in Sense-Sational Science are The University of Tulsa and Tulsa Community College West Campus. Tulsa Public Schools, Berryhill Public Schools and Jenks Public Schools are K-12 district partners. In Tulsa, the non-profit and government partners include Gilcrease Museum, the Linnaeus Teaching Garden, the Oklahoma Aquarium, the Oklahoma Centennial Garden, Oxley Nature Center, Philbrook Museum, the Tulsa Air and Space Museum and the Tulsa Zoo. The program in Women’s and Gender Studies at The University of Tulsa considers how gender and other intersecting factors, such as race, class, culture, sexuality, and age, have worked to shape the life experiences of women and men from diverse backgrounds. The program analyzes the contemporary and historical factors that underlie the current statuses of women and men from all parts of the world and explores the various means by which people have sought to achieve equality. The program’s dual emphases on interdisciplinarity and intersectionality offer students analytical frameworks and methological tools with which to understand people’s life experiences, human interactions, and economic and social institutions. By promoting awareness and knowledge of status-based oppression; of people’s inter-relationships; and of the ways in which civil rights movements throughout history have struggled for equity, the program seeks to contribute to changing attitudes and practices that tend to silence people’s voices or that work to devalue, marginalize, or subordinate women and men’s choices and life experiences. The B.A. degree is offered in this area. For further information about the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, contact Professor Lamont Lindstrom, program co-director, at [email protected] or another board member: Professor Professor Jan Wilson, Professor Holly Laird, Professor Jennifer Airey.

The Department of English immerses students in rich experiences of the literary tradition in England and America and introduces them to critical methods and theoretical approaches to literary study. On this foundation, English electives focus on literary periods, both canonical and noncanonical literary figures, the several genres of literature, and the varied cultural contexts in which English literature has arisen and thrived. Two distinguished academic journals, The James Joyce Quarterly and Tulsa Studies in Women's Literature, are edited and published under the auspices of the department, and the innovative web-based Modernist Journals Project, a collaboration between Brown University and The University of Tulsa, is directed from the department. Undergraduate internships are available at the MJP and both journals, and at the international literary journal Nimrod, which is housed with the department. Work in related fields such as film studies, creative writing, history, philosophy, and the college's certificate programs is encouraged. The overall aim of the program is flexible, yet directive and cumulative, and provides broad opportunities for professional as well as personal post-graduate application.
