Beauty Expert, Mekhat Redefines Beauty Through Educating. Fighting against skewed perceptions of society’s definition of beauty has been a life long quest for Mekhat Moore. There was a time when extremely straight long and relaxed hair was the only acceptable definition of beauty pertaining to hair. At a time when all things ethnic were considered unattractive, the St. Louis native was brave enough to embrace the beauty of women of color. Eighteen years ago while working at a salon, Moore became disturbed by the constant criticism that her clients faced for embracing their natural hair and other styles including braids and locks. Some clients were blatantly repelled by the idea of locks and natural hair and uninhibited in expressing there detest. Mekhat decided she needed to create an environment that would make her clients both comfortable and proud in their own skin –without criticism. She established a goal to educate clients about the importance of us accepting who we are while still having options to be creative with our hair through various methods. Mekhat opened her own salon specializing in natural hair including locks and various braiding techniques. Her decision helped set a trend that can be seen through out St. Louis. As the owner of the signature Napps hair salon, Mekhat has used her knowledge of culture to emphasize on the critical importance of individuality and maintaining healthy hair. Her 18-year quest to detangle the myths of “Good Hair” has finally become a topic that mainstream America is beginning to understand. “It’s all tied into our history and what we’ve been taught to believe about who we are,” she explains. With the release of Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” documentary -- the conversation about who we are and what extremes (financially & emotionally) we take to fit inside the circle of euro centric standards has been posed. Unfortunately, Mekhat believes the answer still remains unsolved. She looks forward to sharing her wealth of knowledge with many people. Mekhat is committed to empowering others through a new way of thinking that embraces our beauty within. Recently Mekhat has been a contributor on NBC and CBS. She is dedicating her time to consulting about hair education and is excited about reaching a wider audience. Mekhat’s knowledge and understanding of ethnic hair has made her the “Go To” expert on natural hair. Appearing on television and in national publications, her expertise is a tool for not just beauty, but green living and the acceptance of individuality. “It’s important for each person to embrace their own unique style deriving from their true essence,” she said. “It’s also very crucial for me to teach clients and consumers healthier alternatives of attaining their desired beauty standard when it comes to hair.”

American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® is a 5K, noncompetitive walk that unites the St. Louis community to honor breast cancer survivors, educate people about steps they can take to reduce their risk or find breast cancer early, and raise funds to help end this disease. More than 192,000 women were expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and more than 40,000 to die from the disease. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just the name of an event: it represents the progress we are making together to defeat this disease. Funds raised through this event support the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or finding it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking research; and by fighting back by encouraging lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.
