The Boston City Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, was a public hospital, located in Boston's South End. It was "intended for the use and comfort of poor patients, to whom medical care will be provided at the expense of the city, and... to provide accommodations and medical treatment to others, who do not wish to be regarded as dependent on public charity." In 1996 it merged with the Boston University Medical Center Hospital to form the Boston Medical Center.HistoryIn the mid-19th century "the hospital was suggested... by Elisha Goodnow, who, by his will, dated July 12, 1849, gave property to the city valued at $25,000, for establishment of a free city hospital in Wards Eleven or Twelve." Architect Gridley James Fox Bryant designed the first hospital, built 1861–1864 on Harrison Avenue in the South End. It was renovated in 1875, and again in 1891–1892.As of 1905, the hospital consisted of " the hospital proper, on the area bounded by Harrison Avenue, East Concord Street, Albany Street and Massachusetts Avenue, containing 430,968 square feet, or 9.9 acres; the South Department, 745 Massachusetts Avenue, containing 125,736 square feet, or 2.9 acres; the ambulance station, boiler and dynamo house, coal-pocket and wharf, Albany street, containing 69,785 square feet, or 1.6 acres; the convalescent home, Dorchester Avenue, Dorchester, containing 610,500 square feet, or 14 acres; and the relief station, Haymarket Square, 8,507 square feet, or 0.2 acres."

The Department of Dermatology at Boston University provides care to inpatients and outpatients at Boston Medical Center, Neighborhood Health Centers, the Jamaica Plain Veterans Administration Hospital, Brockton and Commonwealth Avenue Clinics. The Department occupies a 36,000 sq. ft (4000 m2) building on the Boston University Medical Center campus adjacent to the Medical School, School of Public Health, School of Dental Medicine and Boston Medical Center, the principal teaching hospital. Faculty and clinical associates offer expertise in practically all subspecialty areas within dermatology, including: skin oncology, dermatologic surgery, phototherapy, laser and cosmetic surgery, photopheresis, alopecia, skin ulcers, wound management, pediatric dermatology, acne, psoriasis, eczematous disorders, autoimmune diseases and infectious diseases of the skin. Departmental researchers are leaders in fields such as skin aging, stem cell biology, skin cancers, melanocyte biology and melanoma research including basic and translational research programs. The Dermatopathology Section processes over 30,000 biopsy specimens every year. The Section makes use of state-of-the-art equipment, including advanced laser-capture microdissection techniques and sophisticated image analysis. The Section also has an extensive set of teaching slides and a 12-headed teaching microscope with a video monitor. Our founding director, Dr. Margaret Bauman, discovered the first anatomical differences between a neuro-typical brain and a brain with autism. In 1981, she founded a multidisciplinary evaluation, treatment, and advocacy program, called LADDERS, that largely serves children, adolescents and adults on the autism spectrum. The Autism Treatment Network (ATN) was launched in 2005 based on Dr. Bauman's LADDERS model, which works to standardize the ways physicians practice and collaborate to identify successful treatment strategies. To supplement bedside understanding of autism with benchside research, and to ensure the continuation of pioneering autism research - like her discovery - was never paused from a lack of funds, Dr. Bauman created The Autism Research Foundation.
The idea for Michael's Place was inspired by Michael Tamburello, a 26-year-old who has profound autism. Growing up, Michael needed a place to go where he could be himself: where he did not have to be told to be quiet, or to act a certain way, or to change. He needed a place that would allow him to be in the presence of people who understood him. Michael’s Place was created to serve that purpose for children with developmental disabilities who, like Michael, need space to learn, have fun, and grow. Michael’s Place was founded by The Autism Research Foundation along with Michael’s sister, Jenna, with the purpose of taking an active role in providing services for children with special needs.
History and Mission The Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts was founded forty-two years ago in the South End of Boston; with a small group of Puerto Rican pioneers who decided to organize an activity, whereby the community could promote a sense of belonging and cultural affirmation within the state. Under the leadership of the late Chico Muñoz, and the commitment of many community leaders, the first festival committee was formed. The event took place in 1967 at the Blackstone Park, with approximately 2,500 people. This initiated the development of the Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts, Inc. Today, this cultural event has turned out to be the state’s largest Hispanic event with over 185,000 attendees during a three-day celebration at Franklin Park, one of Boston’s largest fields. The Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, with a statewide membership. The board of directors consists of fifteen members from a broad cross-section of the community; elected every three years by a general assembly of all members as stipulated in the by-laws The organization is one of the most successful and far reaching festivals in the state of Massachusetts. It is by far the largest and best-organized ethnic festival in New England, celebrating its forty-first anniversary this year. It has become one of the premier Puerto Rican celebrations in the nation, surpassed only by New York’s Puerto Rican Parade, New Jersey, Chicago, Ohio and Florida. Attracting people from these same states and providing a community celebration that exhibits the vitality and commitment of Puerto Ricans and Hispanics in general, improving the quality and richness of life in Boston. The organization adheres to and committed to the following principals: To promote a cultural awareness and understanding of the Puerto Rican heritage, including but not limited to, the traditions folklore and other contributions of this community to the United States of America and specially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. To promote and affirm self-sufficiency and responsibility when we teach others the history and cultural values of Puerto Ricans. To foster our citizenship rights to political participation in the mainstream electoral process. To encourage and foster community activism by creating educational and cross-cultural programs that creates multicultural and multiracial dialogues with other ethnic groups residing in Massachusetts. To conduct and encourage educationa,l and community action programs for the benefits of Puerto Rican children. The Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts, a non- profit 501 (c) 3 Corporation seeks corporate partners who wish to share in the social and financial rewards of New England’s largest ethnic festival. Sponsorship is a business related activity in which your company reaches more than 300,000 Hispanics from all over the states and Puerto Rico during a three day celebration and a grand parade with over 30,000 spectators in the parade route. Once the parade reaches its destination, Franklin Field at the Franklin Park, parade watchers join the tens of thousands at the park to celebrate the closing of the three days of festivities. We seek to educate those interested in learning more about Parkinson's disease, to assist support groups throughout the State, to help develop programs to meet the needs of Parkinson's patients and their caregivers and to raise funds to find the cure. While a few of us can accomplish some of these goals, most of them require the support and involvement of people like you. The Chapter is an all volunteer organization. The Chapter works closely with the APDA Information and Referral Center located at Boston University Medical Center
People choosing to live a sober lifestyle often find it necessary to make changes to many aspects of their lives, including their socials circles, in order to maintain sobriety. Abrupt changes in lifestyle can lead to loss of support networks, and often cause people to become isolated. Sober people need to make new friends and discover new hobbies and interests, which can be difficult without the aid social lubricant of drugs or alcohol. Recognizing this challenge, PM makes every effort to remove barriers to getting involved with our sober community. We host daily, free events where the only requirement is to be sober. We are very welcoming to new members and encourage our regular members to get to know the new folks. In addition to offering our events at no charge, we also provide all necessary gear (the equipment required for the disciplines we teach is often very expensive and can deter people from taking up various sports, so PM removes these financial barriers to participation). Though we do not charge for membership, we do ask members to sign a Team Member Agreement. Some of the topics covered in this document include: a 48 hour sobriety policy, no tobacco use at PM events, appropriate behavior among team members, appropriate speech, public records checks, etc.
We manage 136 units of permanent housing and an Outreach program, which helps over 250 elders each year to find and succeed in housing of their own. Recently we partnered with the Corporation for Supportive Housing to create a National Initiative to End Elder Homelessness.
