The Crest Theatre is a historic theatre located in downtown Sacramento, California.HistoryIt originally opened in 1912 as the Empress Theatre, and at that time was used as a vaudeville palace. It later became the Hippodrome. On September 14, 1946 the Hippodrome's marquee suddenly fell to the pavement below, killing a bystander, Mrs. Jessie Shirley Potter, 41, of Alta, who was crushed beneath the marquee. Joseph Brady, 40, was struck a glancing blow and sustained a skull fracture, broken collarbone, permanent brain injury and loss of hearing in one ear. Damages of $176,334.50 were sought by Potter's family and by Brady in superior court.Shortly after the tragedy, in 1949, the building was completely remodeled and revamped to its current form as the Crest Theatre. During the 1950s and 1960s, it was one of the premier first-run movie palaces in the Sacramento area. As the decade turned to the 1970s, it was reduced to mostly sub-run fare. In the early 1980s, the Crest closed down for a time while several attempts were made to revive the theatre in many forms, including a dinner theatre. Finally, by the end of 1995, the Crest was completely refurbished and today its main auditorium (which has been left in its post-1946 unaltered state) is a multi-purpose theatre showing classic revival and specialty films, occasional live shows and lectures. Two additional cinemas were built adjacent to the original site around the time of the remodeling. The Trash Film OrgyThe Trash Film Orgy is an annual event extending through six weeks in the summer, with occasional Halloween and Christmas shows. It features cult cinema, live stage shows, live bands, local films, carnival-type games, a lounge (hosted by retrocrush.com), and audience participation. Live guests are occasionally featured and have included filmmaker Ray Dennis Steckler, actor Sid Haig and others.
current class schedule with class day/ time, titles, and teachers (see new postcard for the info) $10 for 60 minute and $15 for 90 minute classes. Wear clothes you can move in. We work it, so bring a water bottle and be prepared to sweat! What is Fusion? In Hot Pot Studios fusion classes, you will learn a combination, or small choreography, as well as have a workout isolating and layering areas of the body to fuse multiple styles of World Dance. Utilizing Sigil Style teaching format, fusion classes focus on drills, layering body isolations, and memorizing a small combimation to pul it all together. What is ITS? ITS stands for Improvisational Tribal Style. This style of dance is a non verbal form of communication where groups can dance together using a specific vocabulary of movements communicating the timing and variations of the vocabulary. We like to compare Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) to a language. When learning a new language, you have to learn the root words before forming a sentance. Because of the similarity in learning UNMATA ITS to learning a new language, we recommend that students complete the UNMATA ITS Level 1 vocabulary before taking other levels of UNMATA ITS classes at Hot Pot Studios. What are Amy Sigil Specialties? Amy Sigil will be offering intensives, ITS work and choreography classes in specific sessions rather than in a weekly class format. We will be announcing these specialty sessions as they are scheduled.
The Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, now entering its 16th season, is one of Sacramento’s most prestigious arts organizations. Since the fall of 1998 we have produced over 100 concerts, including 8 world or national premieres. Outstanding programs have included the Songs of Hope series, which featured musicians from Israel, Egypt and Palestine playing with the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, and a tribute to acclaimed composers with Latino roots or ties, Viva la Musica. For fifteen seasons, Michael Morgan has served as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the orchestra, infusing board, staff and musicians with his passion for building community through music. This passion is expressed in programming for a diverse community, and in a variety of community engagement initiatives reaching into schools, hospitals, housing shelters and other places where classical music can ignite hope, strengthen self-esteem and provide respite from a stressful world. We take pride in our accomplished professional musicians, engaged through a Collective Bargaining Agreement with American Federation of Musicians Local 12. In addition to performing in highly-praised concerts, many of them are actively engaged in the Philharmonic’s Community Engagement programs, teaching, performing in ensembles and wholeheartedly helping to “Build Community Through Music.”
