LFCS serves Missouri families, children and individuals from all walks of life in their greatest times of need. Services are open to anyone regardless of race, faith, national origin, gender, or age. As a nonprofit social services organization, our goal is to open doors for people who are challenged by poverty, unexpected pregnancy, violence, divorce, unemployment, illness, homelessness, loneliness and more. We provide four key areas of support to tackle these challenges—Child Welfare, Mental Health Services, Child and Teen Development, and Disaster Services. The programs offered through each of these areas empower individuals and families and seek to develop healthy, supportive foundations for a lifetime. Our staff delivers professionalism and personal care in equal measure to every situation and each client who visits one of our five offices around the state of Missouri. And everything we do integrates with the community to enrich and heal the lives of people in hopes that troubled individuals find hope and realize that tomorrow can be different than today.

Ready Readers

St. Louis, MO 63132

(314) 564-8070

Our Vision: All children who participate in the Ready Readers program enter kindergarten with the skills to be ready to read, as defined by state early learning standards. Ready Readers began in September of 1997 when Pat Simons, Founder and retired Executive Director, and three other St. Louisans organized to help prevent, rather than remediate, reading problems among children living in poverty. Pat designed a program to excite preschool children about the world of books, so that they would want to read when they were ready. In 1999, an independent Missouri nonprofit corporation named Ready Readers was formed and a Board of Directors was established.. Ready Readers received tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status in June of 1999. Ready Readers is premised upon the well-studied fact that children who are unmotivated to become readers rarely learn how to read well. Wanting to learn, however, depends upon regular exposure to reading aloud and access to children’s books at home. Children living in poverty are insufficiently exposed to regular read-aloud sessions, and they lack sufficient access to books. Nearly two-thirds of low-income American children have no books at home. (Source: Reading Literacy in the United States, 1996; Magnitude, Facts on Illiteracy, www.firstbook.com) To begin closing the achievement gap between low-income children and those who are more fortunate, we must make sure that underserved children have access to more books at home. Early intervention such as ours – which supplies weekly read aloud sessions and gives each child a regular supply of picture books – works to motivate pre-kindergarten children to want to learn to read. Borderquest will function on university campuses as a grassroots organization that focuses on educating and advocating for justice for immigrants. Immigrants face difficult barriers when they are in need of healthcare. Under the current healthcare system, lawfully residing immigrants in the US must wait five years before becoming eligible to receive aid through federal programs like Medicaid. This leaves those people reliant on community health centers and hospital emergency rooms as their primary source of healthcare. However, this system is not sustainable because emergency medicine is not only more expensive for the individual, but also for the government. Borderquest focuses on three different forms of education and advocacy: A) Campus action: where members will engage with other students in order to share information about immigration issues by means of social media and personal interaction B) The St. Louis conference: where all members of individual Borderquest campus organizations are invited to join members from other schools in order to celebrate their continued efforts and to focus on the opportunities that social media creates - Social Media for Social Justice C) The Borderquest Experience: where selected members of individual Borderquest organizations will travel south to Laredo, TX in order to take part in a six-day learning service program. Participants will engage with immigrants, hear their personal accounts of the journey, and get a first-hand feel for how the immigration system functions on the US/Mexico border.

Could you have assumed all the responsibilities of adulthood when you were 18 or even 20 years old? This is what society asks of foster youth. Each year hundreds of young people exit Missouri’s foster care system unprepared to tackle adulthood. More than half become homeless or transient within a few years; joining the ranks of thousands in the St. Louis Area that find themselves without stable homes annually. Community Response provides evidence-based and replicable interventions that reduce homelessness among exiting and former foster youth, ages 17-24, in St. Louis City and County. These efforts are punctuated by a desire to offer peace of mind, focus and support – in that order. In eleven years we have helped over 200 foster youth transition into adulthood. Our independent living program provides up to three years of housing, case management and 24-hour support. In return, participants agree to pursue education and/or employment goals and engage in substantive life skills training and counseling.
