Cannery Row is the waterfront street in the New Monterey section of Monterey, California. It is the site of a number of now-defunct sardine canning factories. The last cannery closed in 1973. The street name, formerly a nickname for Ocean View Avenue, became official in January 1958 to honor John Steinbeck and his well-known novel Cannery Row. In the novel's opening sentence, Steinbeck described the street as "a poem, a stink, a grating noise, a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream."HistoryCannery Row was the setting of John Steinbeck's novels Cannery Row (1945) and Sweet Thursday (1954). Both were the basis for the 1982 movie Cannery Row, starring Nick Nolte and Debra Winger. It is also mentioned in Bob Dylan's song "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands". Pacific Biological Laboratories, a biological supply house, was located at 800 Ocean View Avenue (now 800 Cannery Row) from 1928 to 1948, and operated by Edward F. Ricketts, who was the inspiration for several characters in Steinbeck novels. The laboratory is still preserved. Across from the laboratory still exists a Chinese-American-owned store mentioned in both Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday, as well as a vacant lot that was the "home" of some of the homeless characters in the novel.

Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS), designated in 1992, is a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. At its deepest point, MBNMS reaches down 12,713 feet (more than two miles). It is our nation's eleventh marine sanctuary and its largest--larger then Yosemite or Yellowstone national parks. Supporting one of the world's most diverse marine ecosystems, it is home to numerous mammals, seabirds, fishes, invertebrates and plants in a remarkably productive coastal environment. MBNMS was established for the purpose of resource protection, research, education and public use of this national treasure. MBNMS is part of a system of 13 national marine sanctuaries and Papahānaumokuākea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments, administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Pacific Biological Laboratories, abbreviated PBL, was a biological supply house that sold preserved animals and prepared specimen microscope slides, many of which were of maritime aquatic species, to schools, museums, and research institutions. It was located in a building on what is now Monterey's Cannery Row on Monterey Bay in Monterey County, California. The building, activities, and business were fictionalized as "Western Biological Laboratory" by John Steinbeck in his novel Cannery Row, as was a character based on one of its founders, Ed Ricketts.HistoryThe company was started by Ed Ricketts with his college roommate and business partner Albert Galigher in 1923. Originally located in Pacific Grove at 165 Fountain Avenue, the lab was moved to 740 Ocean View Avenue, Monterey, California around January, 1930, where Ricketts became sole owner. Today, that location is 800 Cannery Row. After Ricketts developed marital problems with his first wife Anna, the lab served as Ricketts's home for some time beginning in 1936.On November 25, 1936, a fire broke out at the Del Mar Cannery next to the lab (site of today's Monterey Bay Aquarium) and most of the contents of the laboratory were destroyed. The manuscript for Between Pacific Tides survived the fire as it had already been sent to Stanford University for publication. It was Steinbeck that saved the lab financially after the fire with the purchase of half the company's stock.

Since 1961, the Beacon House has occupied one of Northern California’s most cherished Victorian-era mansions. Ross had worked for years with Marty Mann, the President and Founder of the National Council on Alcoholism, as well as serving as an early advocate for alcoholism treatment. It is important to note that Mann was the first documented sober woman in Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12-Step approach remains at the core of the programs offered at Beacon House. The Beacon House received significant early financial support from Samuel F.B. Morse, Founder of the neighboring community and resort of Pebble Beach. AFRP rescues over 1,400 cats, dogs and rabbits each year. We play a unique role in our community by rescuing the animals that are most at risk in the shelter environment: the underage, nursing, senior, injured, shy and overlooked animals. Adoption Program We place homeless animals into good permanent homes by showcasing our animals at our main Adoption Center, satellite adoption centers, offsite events and our website. Volunteer Program Volunteers provide foster homes, adoption counseling, transportation, office assistance and much more to help the animals. Junior volunteers socialize kitties, work in the adoption center and help at events. Life Link Transport Program Every week our team of volunteer drivers transports at risk dogs from our overcrowded shelters to safety with animal welfare organizations that are eagerly awaiting them throughout the westerns states. We transport an average of 1,600 dogs a year. Community Spay/Neuter Program • We provide low cost spay/neuter vouchers for cats to the public. • We are working to combat the overpopulation crisis in Monterey County with targeted spay/neuter programs to reduce the number of animals entering our shelters. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, "Life's most urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Mahatma Ghandi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." We recognize that our world is full of hope-builders. Every community impacted by crisis–be it a city, a refugee camp, a slum, a village–already has men, women, and even children who live out compassion and hope in astonishing ways. They feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give shelter to the homeless, provide jobs to the jobless, education to the unschooled, and whatever else it takes to transform communities mired in crisis into thriving communities bursting with hope. These hope-builders observe their world and ask what OUGHT to be instead of settling for WHAT IS. They don't wait for someone else to come. They trail-blaze a path for hope by simply going and doing what needs to be done. They do the heavy-lifting of hope because they simply must–regardless if others join them or not. Some are professionals, many are not. Some are faith-based, many are not. Some work with organizations, many do not. Yet all know and love their communities intimately. SPERO, Latin for "I hope" because hope-builders joining forces with one another like sparrows taking flock can accomplish a whole lot more than one courageous hope-builder working alone. Collaborating also has the brilliant effect of eliminating the fear of going the journey alone. We collaborate for hope in hard places Collaboration is more than connection. It is building momentum in uncommon community for changing the world. Collaboration is face-to-face, side-by-side, and online connecting. It is mutual mentoring. It is friendship with force. Because hope-building is always specific to the person or community in need we THINK and ACT locally in order to collaborate with hope-builders who are also THINKING and ACTING locally in hard places around the world. Our local thoughts and actions CAN and SHOULD have global ripple effects. When like-hearted hope-builders connect they are inspired. We discover what other hope-builders in different contexts may be doing in slightly better fashion. When collaboration is intentional, mutual, and beneficial for all the hard places in our world transform toward hope at a greater and more exponential pace. Whether in refugee camps or the hood, whether in homeless shelters or prisons, whether in war zones or disaster areas we want to connect hope-builders with one another in the hardest of places. The at-risk, the poor, the refugee, the orphan, the prisoner, the former slave, the underserved are always with us because those are our friends. And some of them have become and are becoming world-changing hope-builders themselves. When a former slum kid is today running orphanages and bringing schooling to current slum kids–when a former gang-banger is providing job-training for at risk youth in the hood–when former incarcerated youth are mutually empowering former child soldiers in running businesses . . . those are people and real live stories worth every ounce of your collaboration. Collaborate with us by: Connecting us to hope-builders in your community. Giving money to the amazing hope-building projects listed here to jump-start your own hope-building efforts. Spreading the word in your social networks about SPERO, an enlivened network of hope-builders changing the world one meal, one shelter, one person, one community at a time.
