Veterans Memorial Auditorium is a performing arts theater in Providence, Rhode Island. Construction began in 1928, but was delayed by the Great Depression. The theater was finally completed in 1950. The VETS is among the oldest arts venues in Rhode Island and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was completely restored in 1990. The ornately-designed 1,931-seat concert hall houses the largest theater stage in Rhode Island and is considered to have some of the best acoustics in New England. The performance space features a gilded proscenium arch, allegorical and heraldic ceiling murals. The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra holds several concerts at The VETS each year. In addition, The VETS hosts a broad range of events each season, offering a variety of performances, rehearsals, exhibitions, concerts, educational events, meetings, and other special events. Since 1950, when the theater opened, it had begun to fall into disrepair and in the early 1980s the state of Rhode Island was thinking of closing the auditorium and the adjoining Masonic Temple and reducing the complex to a parking lot. In 1983, the Veterans Memorial Auditorium Preservation Association was formed to try to save the auditorium. They rallied for five years and in 1988 Governor DiPrete awarded the VMAPA with $5 million for the building's renovation. Since that time it has been a center for the arts. In 2015 The VETS completed another series of renovations making it a state of the art performance facility. The Renaissance Providence Hotel, formerly the Masonic Temple, is located directly adjacent to the The VETS.

The Westminster Arcade, also known as the Providence Arcade, Arcade Providence, or The Arcade, is a historic shopping center at 130 Westminster Street and 65 Weybosset Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Built in 1828, it is notable as the first enclosed shopping mall in the United States. Lauded as fine example of commercial Greek Revival architecture, it served as a shopping center for many years before falling into decline in the late 20th century. It has since been closed for renovation and rehabilitation several times, and most recently reopened its doors in October 2013 as a residential and commercial mixed-use building. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976.HistoryThe Arcade was developed as a commercial business venture by Cyrus Butler. Although its preliminary design called for only two floors of shops, a third floor was added to the plans before construction began. The building, designed by Russell Warren and Tallman & Bucklin, called for an arcaded lane of shops, with skylights in the roof providing illumination, in emulation to similar structures then found in some European cities. Construction of the mall roughly followed the original plan, but the need for a vestibule and stairway on the Weybosset Street side of the building to provide access to the third floor necessitated some hasty alterations which were not well-constructed and required repairs in the 1940s.The building served as a shopping center well into the 20th century. After falling into disrepair, it was rehabilitated by architects Irving B. Haynes & Associates and Gilbane Properties, and reopened in 1980. It closed again in 2008 for renovations, and reopened in October 2013 as a mixed-use commercial and residential "micro-loft" space.

RISD's Illustration Department is the largest undergraduate program at the College. Founded to educate newly returned WWII veterans in the mid-1940's, the department's panoptic breadth of study—balancing impulse of mind and hand, concept and form—has long encouraged innovative approaches to visual communication. RISD Illustration alumni are among the most accomplished in the field and this Facebook page is for students, faculty, alumni and anyone interested in the goings on of our department. Since August 1994, when the Paul Krot Darkroom was established at 115 Empire Street, AS220’s photography programs have grown to embrace both digital and traditional B&W photography, added studio lighting and camera rentals, as well as resources for photo finishing, digital editing and large-format printing, and broadened AS220’s educational offerings with a host of new workshops. In March 2012, AS220 announced that it would further expand its photography programs to create a home for creative work in complementary analog and digital mediums such as: film, video, computer/internet applications, and audio. In addition to the resources offered at AS220 Media Arts, located alongside AS220 Labs and the Community Printshop at the Mercantile Block, artists can access the solo and group facilities of the Paul Krot Community Darkroom, the only public-access professional B&W darkroom in Rhode Island. About AS220 AS220 was founded in 1985 on the principle that freedom of expression is crucial for the development of strong communities and individual spirits. AS220's vision for a local unjuried and uncensored forum for the arts was launched in a one-room rental above the Providence Performing Arts Center with a budget of just $800. Today, the non-profit owns - and enlivens - three mixed-use buildings, totaling over 100,000 square feet, in the heart of Providence's downtown. Though sizable, AS220 is bursting at the seams with: four rotating gallery spaces, a performance space, a youth program, a recording studio, a print shop, a darkroom and media arts lab, a high-tech fabrication and electronics lab, a black-box theatre, a dance studio, four dozen affordable live/work studios, an AS220 owned and operated bar and restaurant, plus a handful of locally-grown non-profit and commercial tenants. AS220's facilities and services are available to any artist who needs a place to exhibit, perform, or create original work and its classes and public-access studios are among the most affordable in the nation. Each year, AS220 serves over 1,000 artists, reaching an audience 50,000 strong - and growing.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society's premiere event to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. But it’s more than just the name of a walk – it describes the amazing progress we’re making together to defeat this disease. Since 1993, 8 million walkers have raised more than $460 million through Making Strides.
Participants will race, run, or walk up 44 flights of stairs inside the Omni Providence Hotel in Downtown Providence. Non-firefighters will compete beginning at 9am. Firefighters will begin competing at 1pm. Firefighters compete for the trophy dressed in full gear. Each climber is responsible for a registration fee payment per person, as well as a $100 fundraising minimum PER PERSON, due by the date of the climb. An afterparty and awards ceremony will be held immediately following the climb at Union Station Brewery, located at 36 Exchange Terrace, Providence, RI 02903.
Our comprehensive programs and services include shelter, case management, life skills coaching, parenting, counseling, advocacy, referrals and support to help clients access education, employment, health and legal services, protective orders and safe housing. In addition, our hotline services are available 24 hours per day/seven days per week, and we provide educational and community outreach programs. The Women’s Center is one of six member agencies of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and is formally affiliated with Crossroads Rhode Island, the state’s leading provider of services to homeless people. This affiliation enables both organizations to address the connection between domestic violence and homelessness through collaboration. Our efforts to help survivors heal and move on to self-sufficient lives and our work to educate individuals about domestic violence have become increasingly important in our community. Last year alone, WCRI provided safety, shelter and services to 234 women and children (including 62 families) experiencing domestic violence, fielded over 2,300 hotline calls from victims of domestic violence and provided educational outreach programs to hundreds of adults and children. As a non-profit organization, the Women’s Center relies upon the commitment and support of caring and generous donors and community partners to help us make a difference in the lives of the individuals we serve together.

The Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Council is a nonprofit organization based in Providence, Rhode Island that serves as a networking center for scholars, authors, artists, and fans of the Weird literary world, inspired in part by Providence author H. P. Lovecraft and expanded upon by so many others. We strive to foster a vibrant and diverse global weird fiction and art community, and to provide a home for this community here in Providence. We organize public educational events, such as our flagship NecronomiCon Providence – a biennial convention that explores the works of Lovecraft and other Weird authors and artists via talks, panel discussions, readings, and workshops. We also present events throughout the year, including lectures, walking tours, art exhibits, film screenings, plays, and concerts to highlight the worldwide weird and showcase Lovecraft's hometown of Providence – a city that he honored and immortalized in the minds of countless individuals around the world.

The Rhode Island Black Heritage Society was founded in 1975 with a mission to preserve three centuries of African American history in the state. The Society has amassed a collection that preserves the evidence of local African Americans’ achievements in military service, business, politics, the arts, and education. The collection includes slave documents, a pew from the historic Pond Street Church in Providence, and original canvases by celebrated painter Edward Mitchell Bannister, in addition to books, pamphlets, letters, manuscripts, prints, photographs, and other archival material relating to African Americans in Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Black Heritage Society also encourages and promotes the study of African American history by hosting tours and lectures for the general public.
RILS is a 501c3 nonprofit corporation organized for the purposes of providing legal assistance in noncriminal proceedings or matters to persons financially unable to afford legal assistance in the state for Rhode Island. RILS provides high quality legal assistance and representation to the elderly, victims of domestic violence and low-income individuals. RILS has twenty-eight staff attorneys in two offices (main office in Providence and another office in Newport) that serve all areas of the state. RILS is principally funded through grants from Legal Services Corporation, a nonprofit corporation established by Congress to administer a national legal assistance program throughout the country.
