It is with poetic license that Goldilocks Gallery takes its name from NASA scientists who, in searching for life on other planets, look first to planets whose orbit is neither too close nor too far from its sun to support biological evolution, that is, the "Goldilocks zone." Here on Earth, memes not genes are the fastest evolving replicators and this diy venue is dedicated to their progress.

Since 1897, The Plastic Club has been devoted to the promotion and preservation of the visual (plastic) arts in Philadelphia. The busy gallery schedule offers several annual exhibitions for members and non-members, as well as invited artists in solo and group exhibitions. Members include well-known Philadelphia artists. The name " Plastic Club," suggested by Blanche Dillaye, referred to any work of art unfinished, or in a "plastic" state. The term also refers to the changing and tactile sense of painting and sculpture. Among the founding members of The Plastic Club were the "Red Rose Girls" -- Violet Oakley, Jessie Willcox Smith, and Elizabeth Shippen Green -- outstanding artists of their time. The name was given to this group of talented women by their teacher Howard Pyle. Although initially formed as a women's group, The Plastic Club has always hosted exhibitions and lectures by prominent men and women artists. Membership was expanded to include men in 1991, and they now number about half of the active members. The Club's home is a historic double townhouse located on one of Philadelphia's "little streets" in the heart of the city. Built in 1824, it houses the club's spacious studio, gallery spaces, offices and dining facilities. The club purchased the property in 1909, and expanded it to include the house next door in 1910. In the past ten years the building has undergone many rennovations so that it now functions like a 21st century building, but still retains its 19th century charm. We are happy to have the venerable Philadelphia Sketch Club as our neighbor to the north on Camac Street. At one time there were several other clubs here, including the Cushman Club, now in private hands, which earned the alley the nickname "Little Street of Clubs". On October 21 2001, the historical value of our tiny street was formally recognized with the designation "Avenue of the Artists" by the City of Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Art Alliance is dedicated to the advancement and appreciation of innovative contemporary art with a focus on craft and design, and to inspiring dynamic interaction between audiences and artists in a setting of historic and aesthetic significance.

Our two exhibition spaces are The Upstairs Gallery and The Stewart Gallery. Admission is free and open to the public during our gallery hours. Da Vinci Art Alliance is a public, non-profit 501(c)(3) artists’ organization located in South Philadelphia.The organization was founded in 1931 to serve the needs of professional artists and artisans in the Delaware Valley. DVAA currently has over 150 members and is supported through membership dues, gallery rentals, sales com- missions, grants, and donations. It holds exhibitions of members’ and non-members’ artwork as well as special events, workshops, performances, poetry read- ings, and lectures, and keeps it’s members informed on community events, news and opportunities.The mission of our non-profit artists-run organization is to support its members and to further community based arts, cultural, and educational exchanges. The Alliance was founded in 1931 by 17 prominent Philadelphia artists.They were all Italian-American and decided to name the alliance after the consummate genius of the Italian Renaissance, Leonardo Da Vinci. The members’ meetings took place in their studios until the late 1960s, when the alliance acquired the building at 704 Catharine Street (diagonally across the street from Fleisher Art Memorial). Originally limited to artists of Italian extraction, the organization became completely integrated shortly after WWII and now welcomes all with an interest in the arts. Aside from its annual all-media members’ exhibition that has been continuous since the group’s inception, the alliance sponsors many art related events through- out the year, including an open juried exhibition, art workshops, art history lectures, and Fringe Festival performances. Da Vinci exhibitions have traveled to other regional venues, such as the Gallery at St. Asaph’s in Bala Cynwyd, the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Arts in Millville, NJ, and the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg. Other solo and group exhibitions and off-site collaborations with non-profit organizations (among them Bartram’s Garden and Lantern Theater Company) are held throughout the year, as is our annual fundraising dinner and silent auction. Da Vinci was the first art group in Philadelphia to recognize people in the area who have contributed greatly to the art world. Awards and testimonial dinners continue to celebrate many distinguished individuals and import- ant contributors. This vital organization is supported by a diverse group of artists and patrons. As we continue forward with our commitment to our members and our community, Da Vinci Art Alliance welcomes professionally qualified artists, art professionals and cultural patrons. Da Vinci Art Alliance is supported by annual membership dues, gallery and studio rentals, a 20% commission on sales of art by members, and receives additional funding from grants and donations. Through their low annual dues members proudly share in the ownership of the building and a strong tradition of volunteerism. James Oliver Gallery (JOG), which opened its doors in late 2006, aims to be a leader in the presentation of contemporary art in the Philadelphia area. An appealing and lively forum in Philadelphia's Center City, the gallery looks to shatter rigid notions of artistic presentation. Featuring exciting modernist furniture and beautiful views through 19th century fourth floor windows, JOG creates a relaxing environment where patrons are encouraged to convene, socialize, and discuss art. James Oliver, an established painter and musician, oversees all aspects of the gallery. His personal style synthesizes the modern and the minimal, creating a clean aesthetic in his own artworks.
