The Blair School of Music provides undergraduate conservatory-style education in music performance, theory, and history at Vanderbilt University, a major research university located in Nashville, Tennessee. Blair is the youngest and smallest of Vanderbilt's ten constituent schools and colleges.HistoryWhile established in 1964, Blair did not initially offer undergraduate-level courses, instead focusing on pre-college music education as part of the then-independent Peabody College (Peabody is itself now part of Vanderbilt). Through the initiative of Chancellor Alexander Heard in 1981, Vanderbilt began offering undergraduate programs at Blair as part of a wider liberal arts curriculum. In 1986, Blair began awarding its own bachelor's degrees.Degree programsThe Blair School of Music confers the bachelor of music degree in music performance, in composition and theory, and in musical arts. Unique among Vanderbilt's four undergraduate schools, Blair has no graduate students. However, in conjunction with Peabody College, Blair offers a five-year bachelor of music/master of education program in musical arts and teacher education. The Blair School of Music is set apart from other similar undergraduate music programs, like those at Northwestern University, Rice University, and Carnegie Mellon University by offering degrees only to undergraduates, giving them the sole focus of the faculty.

The Martha Rivers Ingram Commons begins four transformative years of a Vanderbilt education. First-year students live and learn together in the 10 Houses of The Ingram Commons – each guided by a Faculty Head of House, a professor and mentor who lives among the students of the House. Together they create the first of four transformative years at Vanderbilt where students are encouraged to develop and contribute their intellectual, social, ethical and personal talents to the fullest. Through The Ingram Commons first-year students connect with each other and the entire Vanderbilt community – the upper class undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, staff and administrators of one of the world’s great research universities.

VUSN is continuous with the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which is known for its highly acclaimed teaching hospital and its groundbreaking efforts in electronic medical records. The School of Nursing is ranked, along with the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, in the top 20 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings.HistoryThe Vanderbilt University School of Nursing was founded in 1908. The School was one of the first five schools to receive Rockefeller Foundation funding to implement the Goldmark Report of 1923, helping to establish nursing as a degree of higher education in the United States. The School began offering the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in 1955, and was one of the first to launch a “bridge” program in 1986, through which students who hold non-nursing degrees can enter the MSN program without repeating undergraduate classes – thereby permitting an accelerated path to the master's degree. Vanderbilt’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, first conferred in 1935, was restructured into the “bridge” program as one of several innovative entry options. In 1993, Vanderbilt School of Nursing established the PhD in Nursing Science program, leading to nursing research and scholarly activity that has positively impacted health care delivery in a variety of areas. It became part of the Vanderbilt University Medical center in 1984.
