THE KOREA SOCIETY is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization with individual and corporate members that is dedicated solely to the promotion of greater awareness, understanding and cooperation between the people of the United States and Korea. In pursuit of its mission, the Society arranges programs that facilitate discussion, exchanges and research on topics of vital interest to both countries in the areas of public policy, business, education, intercultural relations and the arts. Funding for these programs is derived from contributions, endowments, grants, membership dues and program fees. From its base in New York City, the Society serves audiences across the country through its own outreach efforts and by forging strategic alliances with counterpart organizations in other cities throughout the United States as well as in Korea. The Korea Society traces its roots to 1957 when a group of prominent Americans, under the leadership of General James A. Van Fleet, who commanded the U.S. armed forces in the final phase of the Korean War, established the first nonprofit organization in the United States dedicated to the promotion of friendly relations between the people of the United States and Korea "through mutual understanding and appreciation of their respective cultures, aims, ideals, arts, sciences and industries." As it exists today, The Korea Society is the successor to several interconnected organizations pursuing aspects of these objectives which were established through the joint efforts of Americans and Koreans over the ensuing decades, most notably, the New York-based U.S.-Korea Society and the Washington, DC-based U.S.-Korea Foundation. In June 1993, these two organizations were merged to form The Korea Society.

The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre has been a major force in American theatre and theatre education since its founding. The Neighborhood Playhouse was founded in 1915 at the forefront of the American theatre renaissance. Created by two philanthropic sisters, Alice and Irene Lewisohn, with the help of Rita Wallach Morgenthau, the original Playhouse was located in the famous Henry Street Settlement House. The Neighborhood Playhouse was one of the first Off-Broadway theatres. Committed to community and devoted to renewing the roots of drama, the Playhouse mounted works both classic and modern. In 1928 The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre opened its doors. The first class of only nine students had the privilege of being taught by theatre luminaries Martha Graham, Louis Horst, Laura Elliott, and Agnes DeMille. In 1935, Sanford Meisner joined the faculty. Over the years, this founding member of The Group Theatre developed and refined what is now known as the Meisner Technique: “To live truthfully under given imaginary circumstances.” The Meisner Technique is a step-by-step procedure of self-investigation for the actor now widely recognized as one of the foremost acting techniques taught today. Sanford Meisner retired in 1990 and served as Director Emeritus of the Acting Department until his death in 1997. All of the current members of the Neighborhood Playhouse acting department were trained to teach acting by Sanford Meisner.

Little Picasso NYC - Children's Art Studio
Distance: 0.3 mi Competitive Analysis
313 E 61st St
New York, NY 10065

(646) 559-1588

Little Picasso NYC is a children’s art studio. It is a place where children can have fun, get messy, create and experiment with studio and visual arts. The youngest group of children being 2 years old and up to NO LIMITS in age, they are taught to think outside the box and venture into their own magical world of pure imagination while exposed to studio skills at their age appropriate level. It is not an arts and crafts establishment. It is an artists studio for budding young artists. My name is Isabella Grossman, founder of Little Picasso NYC. Inspired by my 3 1/2 year old granddaughter Novella, I have established the studio back in May of 2011. I have lived in China for several years running and managing a company that manufactures women’s fine accessories and related sportswear separates made of Eco-friendly fabrics and materials. Acted as the head designer, chief production officer and CFO, I was faced with the challenge of having to make a decision when I learned that my daughter was about to become the mother of my first grand child: Do I go back home and face the uncertainties of a tough economy, in competition with young college graduates working at entry level internship positions for what ever jobs might be available, if any, be the grandmother, or keep my ideal job in Guangzhou until retirement? I had no life, married to my job and working on the average of 15 hours a day – It was time to come home! My worst fears came to be: Looking for work, overqualified and middle aged my resources were dwindling while watching Novella grow up. Spending every precious moment available with her and grooming her into a little young artist as soon as she was old enough to stand up and grab things. Forced to work at odd jobs and freelance gigs (not too many available – the jobs were in China) I was creating a Little Picasso without realizing it. My daughter was watching us with joy when she dropped the brilliant brainstorm idea shortly before Novella’s 2nd birthday. “Mom stop looking for a job, the ideal job for you no longer exists in this country. Take what ever money you have left and do this for a living. Open up a children’s art studio – This is your calling” A month later Little Picasso NYC opened the doors to the public in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, one block south of where my granddaughter lives. I am home!
