Annies Café & Bar is a modern Brasserie in the heart of downtown Austin. Inspired by the bustling bistros and great sidewalk cafés of Europe, owner Love Nance reinvigorated the legendary Day Building at 319 Congress and created a space not only for dining but for meeting, drinking and enjoying life. In 2008, longtime Austinites Nance and Jameson lost their lease after running the popular lunchtime café and bakery, then known as Apple Annies, for 26 years. They recreated the café as Annies and moved it to Congress Avenue, the Main Street of Texas. The building: 217-221 Congress has an incredible history we can't wait to bring alive in the renovated space. The 200 block of Congress has been the home to several pubs, saloons, cafes and restaurants over the years including the Bradshaw Saloon, Pearlhouse Saloon, Tradewinds Lounge, The Dew Drop, Avenue Cafe, Las Manitas and Copa Lounge. Across the street was home to the International and Great Northern Rail Road Depot, built in 1888. The upstairs space at 217 was once the Travis Hotel, rumored to have been a cat house in years past! El Alma is a vibrant, homespun take on the contemporary flavors of Mexico. Chef Alma Alcocer-Thomas prepares food as she might cook for you in her home. Diners will find tacos al pastor, queso, and carne asada tacos, but will also have an array of small plates and sophisticated entrees using fresh ingredients and richly layered sauces including duck enchiladas with mole, relleno de camarones (shrimp-stuffed poblano served with chipotle sauce and corn pudding), and for the hearty vegetarians out there, smokey ancho relleno stuffed with seasonal vegetables. Alcocer also features one of her childhood favorites, ‘gringas,’ a popular Mexico City snack made of flour tortillas, cheese, and savory pastor. “I wanted to create a menu that would fit the location on Barton springs,” says Alcocer. “It’s fun, flavorful Mexican food that is very approachable. It’s a casual, authentic representation of the food I grew up eating.”
