In Spring 1971, City College of San Francisco offered its first course directed specifically to women's interests and educational objectives. Its success led to the institution of the Women's Studies program, one of the first in the nation. The department's 30 courses, taught in various disciplines, focus on the complex role of women in society.
Herstory The Women’s Resource Center (WRC) is a student initiated and student run organization. It receives funding from the Associated Students and additional support from the Women’s Studies Department. The WRC started in Spring 1994, sharing its office with Bi-GALA (Bisexual, Gay and Lesbian Alliance) in the Student Union. In September 1994, the WRC moved into its current office in Smith Hall 104, in the cafeteria. It serves all students, both women and men. In addition to support groups and workshops, the WRC sponsors lectures, films, and other events of particular interest to women students. Project SURVIVE, the City College peer education dating violence prevention program, is affiliated with the WRC. An advisory board composed of administrators, faculty, staff and student assists the WRC in setting policy, maintaining a secure funding base, and publicizing the WRC on campus. Hours We are open from 9:00am – 2:00pm Monday through Friday except Wednesday 12:00pm-1:00pm. We may be closed for ten minutes during shift changes, so please be patient. The library also includes herstories, essays, fiction and poetry. We welcome additional contributions. We also have a fax machine availible for students use. Women United Is a student club organized to support the activities of the Women’s Resource Center. Who was Pierre Coste? Pierre Coste was chef and later executive chef in waht was known as the Hotel and Restaurant Program at City College from 1948-1969. Trained in the Traditonal European manner, he attended the Ecole Hotliere Legdignieres in Genoble, France. He apprenticed in the Grand Luxury Hotels of Monte Carlo, Lyon and Paris. After moving to New York, he worked as Chef at the Park Lane, Commodore, Sherry Netherlands and the Waldorf-Astoria Hotels. In 1928 Pierre took position as executive chef at the St. Francis Hotel, where he remained for 17 years. In 1958 City College was fortunate enough to add Pierre to our teaching staff where he remained inspiring, guiding, and mentoring our students until he retired in 1969. In addition to an illustrious teaching career, he was a longtime member and served as the President of the Gastronome Society of America. The Pierre Coste Room is run by students in our Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Program.
Project SURVIVE is a peer education program of the Women's Studies department at City College of San Francisco which trains students to make classrooms presentations on promoting healthy relationships. Peer educators, both women and men, suggest resources and information to help students build intimate relationships based on respect and trust. They also offer students strategies for identifying, avoiding, and leaving abusive relationships. Although Project SURVIVE focuses on ending sexual violence, the program is dedicated to ending all forms of power abuse in relationships--both gay and straight--and in social groups and public institutions. By focusing on the real problem of violence against women while at the same time acknowledging the potential for abuse by anyone, the program offers City College students an honest treatment of a serious problem confronting all of us. Project SURVIVE holds to the principle that violence is a public health problem that can be alleviated, in part, through prevention education. The most empowering aspect of Project SURVIVE is that students deliver solutions to their peers in frank, open discussions. They approach the subject in a non-threatening, hopeful manner. Audiences are always receptive and often enthusiastic. Evaluations indicate that students appreciate learning from their peers--people they can identify with and trust. Project SURVIVE has been visiting classrooms since 1993. We visit 200 classrooms each academic year, serving approximately 4,000 students. In addition to presentations in English, we deliver bilingual Spanish-English presentations at the Mission Campus and bilingual Chinese-English presentations at the Chinatown campus. Project SURVIVE is a member of the Expect Respect SF collaborative, a group of San Francisco rape and intimate partner violence intervention and prevention programs. Other member organizations include SF Women Against Rape, SFLGBT Community Center, W.O.M.A.N., Inc., Young Asian Women Against Violence, The Riley Center, La Casa de las Madres, Health Initiatives for Youth, and Shalom Bayit. The collaborative works to promote healthy and violence-free dating among all youth through youth-centered, culturally sensitive education. We give over 200 presentations to all SFUSD high schools each academic year.
Currently we offer one 5-unit elementary language class during the day, Russian 1 in the fall and Russian 2 in the spring, and four 3-unit classes, generally in the evening,oriented toward both non-native speakers of Russian and heritage learners. Heritage learners concentrate primarily on improving their writing skills. Our four conversation classes are oriented toward acquiring practical expertise for traveling and working in Russia, and the basic language classes give the student a solid grasp of grammar underlying written and oral communication. Our culture class provides background in Russian art, history, literature, music, religion, cinema, and features of everyday life, as well as Russia's relations with the surrounding world. Our literature courses discuss the great poets and novelists of the last two centuries.
The New Student Counseling Department (NSCD) assists new and continuing students with less than 24 units access a wide variety of counseling services to help plan for, adjust to, and succeed in college.
The goal of the APALU program at CCSF is to help build leadership skills for Asian and Pacific Islander Americans who are traditionally under-represented in leadership positions. The APALU program is funded by an AANAPISI grant from the U.S. Dept. of Education. All APALU students participate in the following one-year program: • ASAM 20 or ASAM 65 (Fall semester) • ASAM 22 (Spring semester) • Community Internship (Spring semester) FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Q: How long would I be in the APALU program? A: The APALU program is a one-year program for students. We are accept applications in the Spring semester for the following academic year. Q: Do I have to be an Asian American Studies major to join APALU? A: No, you do not have to be majoring in Asian American Studies. All API students at CCSF are welcome to apply, regardless of major. Q: I don’t hold any formal leadership positions. Should I still apply for the APALU program? A: Yes! We believe that all students (not just students who have formal leadership experience) have the potential to be leaders and to create positive change in their communities. All CCSF students who meet the requirements are invited to apply. Q: Is the internship paid? A: Yes! The internship is a required element of the program and students receive a stipend of $1500 for completing the internship. Internships are individually designed for each student. Quality language instruction at a very reasonable cost, French classes at CCSF are scheduled at times convenient to our busy students. Day and evening classes are joined by one online section (actually blended - we meet one morning per week) per semester. In Fall 2012 and Spring 2013, French 1A is offered in hybrid mode.
Hello Everyone! This Facebook page is a go to source for the annual City Shorts Student Film Festival that takes place at City College of San Francisco now in its 16th year. This is a chance for our students to show the community what turning passion into film can look like. Every year more and more students submit their films to this popular showcase, since it's an amazing stepping stone for anyone seeking a career in the film industry. Many of the festival finalists have been invited to screen their films in other festivals in the wider Bay Area and wider film festival circuit. City Shorts is open to all the public to attend so make sure you're saving the date for Thursday May 19th! The festival will be screening at the historic Diego Rivera Theatre on the Ocean Campus. Also, the festival is completely organized by the students as a part of their Cinema 40, Film Exhibition class, under the supervision of Denah Johnston. See you all on May 19th at 6 PM! The Astronomy Department offers classes of students who wish to satisfy the Natural Sciences requirement for the associate degree. For students intending to transfer to a four-year university that has a laboratory science requirement, 1-unit laboratory classes are offered that may be taken concurrently with or after completion of a lecture course. A complete range of topical courses is provided for students interested in astronomy or astrophysics as a career.
