The Daily News Building, also known as The News Building, is a 476ft skyscraper located at 220 East 42nd Street between Second and Third Avenues in the Turtle Bay neighborhood of Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The building has 36 floors.Built in 1929–1930, it was headquarters for the New York Daily News newspaper until 1995. It was also the headquarters of United Press International until the news service moved to Washington, DC in 1982. Its design by architects Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells, in the Art Deco style, has been called "one of the city's major Art Deco presences" by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, as well as "the first fully modernistic free-standing skyscraper of architect Raymond Hood." It was among the first skyscrapers to be built without an ornamental crown, and can be seen as a precursor to Hood's design of Rockefeller Center. A 1957–60 addition to the building which expanded the lobby on the southwest corner of Second Avenue was designed by Harrison & Abramovitz, echoing the vertical stripes of the original design, except with a wider stripe. The building, including the newspaper's new printing presses, cost $10,700,000 - about $135 million in 2010 dollars.

The New York Times Building is a skyscraper on the west side of Midtown Manhattan, New York City that was completed in 2007. Its chief tenant is The New York Times Company, publisher of The New York Times as well as the International New York Times, and other newspapers. Construction was by a joint venture of The New York Times Company, Forest City Ratner (Forest City Enterprises's New York subsidiary), and ING Real Estate.HistoryThe original newspaper headquarters in 1851 were at 113 Nassau Street, in a little building that stood until fairly recently, then up the street a few years later at 138 Nassau Street. In 1858, the Times then moved to a five-story edifice at 41 Park Row; thirty years later, partially in response to a new tower erected by the competing Tribune, it commissioned a new 13-story building at the same site, one that remains in use by Pace University. In 1904, again partially in response to the Herald Square headquarters of another competitor, the paper moved to perhaps its most famous location, the Times Tower, altering the name of the surrounding area from Longacre Square to Times Square. The slender tower was so constricted in space that the paper outgrew it within a decade and, in 1913, moved into the Times Annex, 229 West 43rd Street, where it remained for almost a century.

New York, NY 10016

J. Jonah Jameson, Inc. purchased the Goodman Building on 39th Street and Second Avenue in 1936 and moved its entire editorial and publishing facilities there. Now called the Daily Bugle Building, the office complex is forty-six stories tall, and is capped by the Daily Bugle logo in 30-foot (9.1 m) letters on the roof. There are loading docks in the rear of the building, reached by a back alley. Three floors are devoted to the editorial office of the Bugle and two sub-basement levels to the printing presses, while the rest of the floors are rented. The newspaper is noted for its anti-superhero slant, especially concerning Spider-Man, whom the paper constantly smears as a part of its editorial policy. However, the Editor-in-Chief, "Robbie" Robertson, the only subordinate to Jameson who is not intimidated by him, has worked to moderate it. More positively, the newspaper has also published important exposes of political corruption and organized crime in the city, and also takes a strong stance in favor of mutant rights, which has led to its being targeted by various criminals and hate groups. Due to declining circulation, Jameson has conceded to Robertson's objections and has created a special feature section of the paper called The Pulse which focuses on superheroes. In addition, the paper also intermittently ran a glossy magazine called Now Magazine.

Voices of NY

219 W 40th St
New York, NY 10018

In the days following the September 11th attacks, when Muslim communities felt their perspective was invisible, an association of the independent and ethnic press founded the first online publication in the country to focus on the ethnic media. Ten years later, it continues to be one of only a handful of online publications in the country – and the only one in the New York region – that serves as a bridge between mainstream society and immigrant communities and communities of color. In the spring of 2011, the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism assumed ownership of the site from the New York Community Media Alliance, and redesigned and re-launched the publication as “Voices of NY.” The site curates the best journalistic work being produced by scores of community and ethnic publications and (where necessary) translates that work into English. The audience for “Voices” includes mainstream and immigrant journalists, advocacy groups, city and government agencies, students, and individuals seeking a broader perspective on the news. As a testament to its global reach, “Voices” content is viewed through browsers from 134 countries. Under the Journalism School’s direction, “Voices” will commission more original content. Our role as a central clearinghouse for news will also make it easier for us to spot trends that transcend communities. We will use that position to initiate citywide coverage of emerging issues, as well as promote cross-publication coverage in response to breaking news. We expect “Voices” to evolve into a newswire service that enables the region’s small, independent publications to exchange content, whether it be text, audio, video or photographs. Contact Press Images is one of the most significant agencies and archives of late-20th-century in existence. Representing the work of two-dozen preeminent photographers, including: Founding Members: David Burnett, Frank Fournier, Kenneth Jarecke, Annie Leibovitz, Dilip Mehta, Alon Reininger; Senior Members: Kristen Ashburn, Alexandra Avakian, Stephen Dupont and Lori Grinker; Contributors: Juliana Beasley, Sean Hemmerle, James Hill, Edward Keating Special Contributors: Jane Evelyn Atwood, Martine Barrat, Jonathan Becker, George Butler, Yunghi Kim, Li Zhensheng, Ken Light, Don McCullin, Sebastiaio Salgado and Alfred Wertheimer. Estates: Gilles Caron and Olivier Rebbot This exceptional body of work spans the rise of the Berlin Wall to present day, and includes images of the major events, personalities, and social currents of the 20th century through present day. Contact was founded in New York in 1976, nine months after the end of the war in Vietnam, to facilitate the production of new, independent photojournalism. Under the direction of Robert Pledge. Photographer joined or were selected based on talent and commitment or area of specialization or interest. The agency maintained a consistent editorial direction: a documentary approach that valued depth over speed, pioneered the use of color film to cover the news, in addition to black and white, and primarily focused its collective lens on conflict, human rights issues, and important cultural trends. The agency has since documented the era that saw the end of apartheid, the fall of Soviet Empire, revolution in Central America, famine and genocide in Africa, ethnic violence in the Balkans, the AIDS pandemic, the birth of the Internet, and the War on Terror. Contact photographers have collectively gathered many of the industry’s most distinguished honors, including annual awards from the World Press Photo Foundation in the Netherlands, the National Press Photographers Association, the Overseas Press Club of America and the American Society of Media Photographers. One of the last independent international photographic agencies still in operation, Contact Press Images is unique among agencies of the period (Black Star, Gamma, Magnum, Rapho, Sipa, Sygma) in that its holdings and their contextual materials remain fully intact. As such, the collection represents much more than a gathering of pictures; it is a photographic time capsule, providing a one-of-a-kind insight into history, and into the industry dedicated to capturing it.
