The Department of Biological Sciences provides the biological component of the liberal arts education at Central Washington University. We promote student understanding of biological concepts relevant to the individual and to society, and foster an appreciation of scientific inquiry. Evolution is the unifying theme of our curriculum. Our students obtain a broad education covering a wide variety of biological disciplines. Our teaching philosophy and facilities support a rich education experience with small class sizes, hands-on experience, regular interaction with expert faculty, and opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate research. We offer a full complement of competitive pre-professional programs, strong programs in regional field biology, and a high-quality program for secondary biology educators.

Student success: CWU believes that student success is best achieved by providing supportive learning and living environments that encourage intellectual inquiry, exploration, and application. CWU believes that learning is best achieved in small classroom or group settings with ample opportunities for individualized instruction, mentoring, advising, and programming. CWU Craft Brewing began in 2009 with a partnership between the office of Continuing Education and the College of The Sciences. A certificate program was designed by CWU Faculty, with feedback from an Advisory Board, to address the industry’s need for skilled and educated professionals in craft brewing. Five years and approximately 60 certificate graduates later, a Bachelor of Science in Craft Brewing was created. The interdisciplinary degree, which incorporates the certificate program, was approved on April 20, 2015 by the CWU Board of Trustees and is accepting applications.

The Extraordinary Men Pursing Intellectual Readiness through Education E.M.P.I. R.E organization was founded October 7, 2010 by extraordinarily humble students (Adam Haizlip and Anthony Peterson) and an advisor (Keith Champagne) at Central Washington University. These exemplary scholars sought to transform the lives of all men through transactional servant leadership, guidance, passion and comradeship.

UESL offers 20 hours a week of academic English instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Students are prepared with the skills that they need to study in an American university. CWU prepares students to succeed in a global economy through strong partnerships with 30 colleges and universities around the world. Last year we welcomed more than 400 students from 36 countries to our campus.

CWU is excited to be hosting several FIRST Robotics events throughout the year as part of the University's outreach to K-12 students interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields.
